~ Edward ~

"Your formula is really close, but you forgot these." Edward leaned over, stick in hand, and drew in two small lines next to the circumference of the alchemic circle in the dirt. He stared at you at a fairly close proximity as he explained the significance of making sure to add them in.

You felt your attention straying from your work and more to his golden eyes.

How fascinating they were...

"(Y/n)?" He leaned a bit back, surprising you and shaking you out of your daze. Feeling your cheeks heat up a bit, you apologize, "uh, sorry." Making an exaggerated exasperated sigh, he shrugged and said, "well, it can't be helped if you're naturally worse at alchemy than me." "Shut it, sexist shrimp." "I'm not sexist, and you're only slightly taller than me."

~ You ~

After doing a bit of training, you headed back to the inn room where there were two beds. You had to suppress your endless curiosity as Al claimed again he couldn't sleep and instead offered Ed and you the beds.

After you and Edward crashed on your respective beds, Alphonse suggested he needed to leave and get food since you were staying in tonight. You thanked him before he left.

On your belt, you carried a dagger sheath for which the heavy metal was held in. Depending on what you wished for and your enemy's own weapon, you would transmute it into any weapon. How you would was the only problem, and you and the Elric brothers had yet to find a solution to your problem.

Slipping the dagger from your belt, you got up and sat next to Edward as he took a nap. Poising the blade over his forehead, you murmur to yourself, "he's so defenseless, and could be easily killed. He looks... so naïve, with his hand up his shirt."

And he was a dog of the military.

You slipped the dagger back into its sheath, sighing. His black tank top fully revealed his automail right arm. Tempted to look, you carefully shifted the sleeve over towards his neck more to inspect where his prosthetic arm connected with his human body. The skin was darker near it. You gently placed a hand on the spot.

A tingling sensation follows.

I want to know.

"(Y/n)?"

As the door opened, you waved around your arms to stop yourself from falling backwards and then scooted over to the far side of the bed. Alphonse stood there, his helmet tilted to the side. "Ah, Al-! Th- there you are, and uh, thanks for picking up the food!" "No problem. My brother's asleep?"

You nodded, looking away so he didn't see your red face. "Hey, (Y/n), tell me..." You slowly tilted your head up to glance over at Alphonse.

"What do you think of him?"

Wait...

"W... What?"

"I mean like, you've been with us for a week and studied. How is he as a teacher?" Internally sighing, you slumped. So it wasn't what you were thinking.

"He's good, I guess. But a bit condescending, or lax-? I mean, what else was there to expect from a fifteen year old boy teacher?" Alphonse laughed, and looked down. "Well, I think he didn't want you to go through what we did. Teacher was super harsh on us, and it was pretty hard."

"Huh... was he..." "Oh, it's a she." "Oops, my bad." Hearing rustling beside you, you looked over to see Edward stir a bit. He yawned, took his time in sitting up.

"Oh hey (Y/n), Al. What's up?" "Talking to her about Teacher." "T- Teacher-?!" "Y- yeah......" "Just how scary was she?!"

~ Alphonse ~

"I have a good idea. If all we need for you is many different weapons and the transmutation circles in order to make them, then this should be a piece of cake." Alphonse, as one of the Elric brothers, was always searching for a solution to retrieving their bodies back, so this was nothing to him.

Clasping her hands together, (Y/n) excitedly exclaimed, "really?! Sweet, tell me!" "Yes! This will allow you to make the transmutations you need as well as serving as another tool in combat. But to get it, we gotta go somewhere."

Tilting her head to the side, she asked, "where?" before following him and Ed out of the door.

"Our hometown- Resembool."

They had already bought the tickets in advance, so just a bit after they arrived at the train station, they immediately were set on their way to their birthplace.

Alphonse sighed internally as his brother took yet another nap.

He also saw (Y/n) dozing off, and they laid their heads on one another.

It was cute, but...

Al wished he could sleep, too.

The dull train ride continued, and Al was the only one awake, stuck in that metal body of his, watching Ed and (Y/n) always do what he physically couldn't. He was bitter, but he knew he didn't have the right to be angry at them. He couldn't bring himself to be mad at (Y/n) even if he wanted to, because she was taking time away from the search.

Speaking of (Y/n)... Alphonse did think that on the contrary, (Y/n) had a positive impact of the Elric brothers. Especially Ed, he noted.

Everything was more fun, laid back, and less deadly focused on getting their bodies back. Sure, they'd definitely tell her someday and get back to it, but for now, (Y/n) provided for a nice break. Because of her, they even get a chance- or an excuse- to go visit their hometown.

Edward laughed a lot more. (Y/n) had saved them in the small ways she didn't know, bit by bit.

"Ah." Looking out the window, he noticed they were pulling into the train station. With a light shake of their shoulders, Alphonse roused the two, saying, "hey, sleepyheads. We're here." It took a couple seconds for them to wake up and notice that they were leaning on each other.

"AH!" "S- sorry!" "You're good..." "Well, let's go to Granny and Winry's! Right!"
