Jasper was waiting for me by a lunch table outside, head down. When I approached, he looked daringly at me, so for the first time I saw his eyes. They were blue. The most blue-blue I have ever seen. Just the right mixture of icy blue and ocean blue, to create a stunning contrast between his light eyes and dark hair. His face was just downright beautiful.
"Um, hi. I'm Lua. Some people call me Lu though." I said.
"Jasper." He answered resolutely.
Vicki was right. He had a hint of an accent. It was kind of cool.
"So do you want to eat lunch first or...?" I asked. He sat down and pulled out an apple. The whole time we ate, he stayed quiet, so so did I. When he finished his apple, he threw away the core and waited for me to finish my sandwich. I got up and we started walking.
"Why are you here?" He asked.
"We moved."
"Why though?"
I felt tears waiting behind my eyes. I took a minute to answer so they didn't show themselves.
"My Mom died. My Dad wanted a new start. Wasn't good enough for him I guess." I just blurted it. Something about being around Jasper made me want to blurt out my whole life story.
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing. Tell me about you."
We started to venture out by the track field. It was relaxing to just talk to someone I didn't know.
"Moved here when I was 12. I'm 17. Not really much to know." He shrugged.
"Where did you move from?" This time he took a minute to answer.
"Europe." Okay... maybe he really didn't like talking about this. I pried anyway.
"Really? What part?"
"Germany," he answered, unsure of himself. "My mom's German."
"Oh. So do you have any siblings?" I know I'm going into uncharted territory but I have to ask—
"Had a sister. She... um... passed," I can't even imagine losing Joey to social services, so I sure as hell don't know how hard it was for him to lose his sister forever. He continued, "Four years ago... after we left from Germany."
"What was her name?"
"Is, not was," he snapped. "It will always be her name and she will always be my sister." He stopped, looking surprised himself at what he'd just said, and how he'd said it.
"Sorry. Amalia. Her name is Amalia." We walked the rest of the way in silence.
