-Told in Troye's P.O.V-
Zoe and I sit at the top of the bleachers, where we always hang out after school, (even if summer technically isn't over yet..) watching the football team train for the upcoming school year. Out on the field, a guy with a handlebar mustache & wearing a tacky reflective vest, is touching up some of the white lines in preparation for Saturday's opening game. Over on the far side of the charcoal track that surrounds the field, the cheerleaders sit in the shade of the tree where snacks will be sold during games. I stand and face away from the field, setting my forearms on the metal rail that prevents fans from falling backwards out of the stadium. In the distance, I see the football players jogging down the road. When the line repair guy had showed up, the coach had sent the team off for a run. Zoe joins me at the railing. "I saw Caspar looking at you this morning!!" Zoe was the only one who knew I was gay, and so help me god, I'd like to keep it that way. I can't help but smile. "Oh really? I didn't notice."
Zoe playfully punches my arm "Liar."
She's right. I did notice him looking at me. Caspar Lee, number sixty six. According to stories I've heard from Zoe's boyfriend, Alfie, Caspar's jersey number is equivalent to his I.Q number, but his popularity rating is off the charts...
"But Zoe, he's obviously straight."
She sighs and doesn't respond. I look out to where the team is running, and try to pick Caspar out of the crowd. It wasn't hard. His hot body, excellent hair. I could stare at him all day. I sigh and look down at my checkered shoes.
"What's the matter?" asks Zoe.
"What?"
"You just looked really deep in thought.."
"It's nothing." I move my gaze and mind back to the football players, watching admiringly. I don't even notice when Zoe pulls out a bag of skittles from her bag.
"Want some?" I nod and she pours us each a handful.
"Swap my green ones for your orange ones," I offer, holding out my hand.
"What is it with you and the swapping? Don't be so picky, they all taste the same."
"No, they don't. And it's good to be picky. That way you get what you want in life."
"OR, you wind up with nothing!" Lightning fast, she snatches the Skittles from my open hand and tosses them into her own mouth.
"Hey!"
"See? You could wind up with nothing." Skittles clack against her teeth as she talks. In response to my look of dejectment, she finally reaches into the pouch and plucks out an orange skittle and places it in my hand.
"Thanks a lot, bestie." I roll my eyes and pop the Skittle into my mouth.
"I can't believe it's such a short time before school starts again. Are you as nervous as I am?" Zoe questions. Nervous? Try panicky. Edgy. Jumpy. Anxious. Pftt.. nervous will do.
"Yeah, definitely." The repair man stops to guzzle a power drink, and the boys should be back any time now. When he finally finishes, the players are arriving, and the cheerleaders are out on the field performing their routine.
"He's watching you again.." Zoe speaks without moving her lips. I follow her gaze and Caspar isn't even looking. Maybe he saw Zoe and looked away in time. Is it possible that he's gay?
Maybe bi..
I continue staring. I picture him at our dinner table. My mom, very quiet, not carrying on a conversation. My little brother Tyde, challenging him with a bunch of sciencey questions, and Caspar sitting there bored out of his mind.
The hottest guy in school. Also the dumbest. He'd never be gay. I just need to find myself someone who likes dick AND has a brain...
