Chapter Four
I hop in Carmella’s car and we drive to my house, where we’re spending the rest of the week. My mom’s out of town and so is hers, but my house has a better TV, so she came over to mine instead of me going to hers. Carmella’s car smells like strawberries and the pink fuzzy cover on her steering wheel is soft under my touch. I love it when I get to drive her blue Toyota Camry. It makes me feel special.
“So, when does our plan officially begin?” Carmella asks, not even looking up from her phone.
“Who’re you texting?” I ask.
“Brock,” She smiles. “He’s cute.”
“What happened to…?”
“Don’t mention him,” Carmella gives me a death stare and then turns back to her phone. “Anyway, answer my question.”
“Well,” I slow down as we reach a stop light. “It starts tomorrow…”
“Oooh!” She squeals.
“What?”
“Brock is single, like a pringle and ready to mingle! Just like Mr. Calhone!”
“Carmella…” I groan. I’ve been doing that a lot today, groaning her name. “I can’t believe I let you talk me into this.”
“Honey, did you not see it on the both of your faces?”
“Well, I can’t see my face, sooo,” The light turns green and I cautiously pull out into the intersection.
“There is definitely something there! This is going better than I expected!”
“Carmella,” I giggle.
“He is cute, isn’t he?”
“Cute? I believe the proper word is sexy.”
“So, you fine with going along with the plan now?”
Of course that weird feeling in my gut tells me something’s going to go wrong. I don’t know what, but something will.
“Yeah,” I say hesitantly.
“Yay!” She claps happily.
“Are you saying that to me, or Brock?”
“Both!” She smiles.
“What now?”
“Let’s just say you’re not going to be the only one scoring,” She winks.
“Carmella!” I stare at her.
“Keep your eyes on the road!” She squeals. I look back at the road and take a deep calming breath. “What was that for!?”
“What did you mean, I won’t be the only one scoring!?”
“Oh I think you know what I mean!” She winks again.
“Carmella…”
“Will you stop doing that?” She looks at me. “It’s annoying.”
“So are you!”
“What’s that supposed to mean!?”
I park in my driveway and kill the engine.
“Carmella…”
“Yes…?”
“Never mind,” I shake my head and rest my forehead on the steering wheel.
“What?” She asks.
“Nothing,”
“Honey, I know that you had that bad experience last year with Derek or whatever his name was and that you got your heart broken,” When she says his name I cringe. He cheated on me and made me feel like crap. He even raped me when I tried to break it off. “But there is a man out there for you,” Mr. Calhone’s face pops into my head. “All you need to do is open your heart and let him in.”
