Meeting at the Cafe

Today I looked outside the window and realized it was raining. I opened the door to my walk-in closet, and towards the back were my rain boots that I never wore. I don't even remember buying them. It will be a little strange to trade in my high heels for rain boots. The rain doesn't usually come here, so it is a little different.

I put my boots on before walking out the door, and I felt shorter without the extra height like my heels gave me. Nearby was an umbrella which was becoming a little dusty. I opened the door with a squeak and walked out. I opened the umbrella and the dust was washed off by the rain almost immediately. I was not sure where I was going, but a walk around town seems nice despite the unusual weather.

There were a few other people walking around town as well. I didn't feel the same, like something was missing. Some of the people I walked past looked like business people and were in a hurry. They walked fast to avoid ruining their outfits. Lucky for me, today is my day off.

It's always nice to take a break from the office. It can be stressful sometimes with all the work that needs to be done in a certain time. Not to mention all the paperwork and meetings. I sigh, just thinking about all the work that has to be completed, and I can see my own breath in the air.

A little bit down the road I saw a young couple together, around the late teens. The lad was holding an umbrella for the two of them. They looked so cute together. I didn't realize I stopped walking and was watching them until people from behind me went in front of me, blocking my view of the two young people.

I continued to walk along with the people around me. I noticed the couple went into a cafe. When I finally reached the cafe, it looked really nice and warm. I haven't really been to one, which is a shame. Today, I should change that though.

I grab the cool metal handle and opened the door. The nice warm air hit me, as well as the scent of coffee and fresh bread. There were many paintings hanging up around the walls, most off which has something to do with coffee.

I am not the big of a fan of coffee, but I do enjoy it on days like this when it is cold outside. There were not many people here, just the young couple, an older looking couple, and the employees. This place is usually crowded with people

My stomach let out a low rumble, but luckily nobody else heard it over the jazz music that was playing from the speakers. I walked into the line and looked at the different items the served on the menu above.

"Hello, may I take your order?" the employee said to me. I look at him, and he was looking right back at me.

"Can I get a vanilla latte and croissant?"

"Will that be all?" he asked my after he added the totals into the cash register.

"Yeah," I say, barely audible for him to hear.

"That will be six dollars and thirty-five cents." His voice sounds so a little different when he said that, like he was trying to sound soft.

I pulled out my wallet from my purse and searched for the dollar amount. Once completing that task, I looked around for coins, but all of them seemed to have disappeared.  I was about to get my wallet back out to find another one dollar bill when the cashier said, "I got it." He reached into his pocket and the sound of coins could be heard faintly.

Once the coins were pulled out and he looked at them, a quarter and a dime. He looked up to me and smiled. "Thank you," I said.

"Not a problem," he said. "What name can I put on your order?"

"Karin," I said.

"Karin," he repeated to himself while typing it into the machine. The receipt came out and he handed it to me. "Your order will be done soon Karin. You can take a seat while you wait if you want."

I moved to the side to let the people behind me order, but nobody was there. The weather must be preventing them from coming here. I walk to find an empty table, which wasn't that hard. I decided to pick the table next to the window so I can look outside for some entertainment.

I heard someone whistling along with the jazz music was playing. I turned around and the cashier has a tray with, what looked to be, my order. His lips were pursed. When he reached the table  was at, he set the tray down in front of me and sat on the other side of the small table meant for two people. "Do you come her often?"

I laughed to myself inside my head as he was struggling to start a conversation. "No, I don't." I picked up my croissant and took a bite from it. It was soft and warm, much different than the one I buy at the grocery store.

The smile that was on his face disappeared a little. "Oh," he said. "So what brings you here today?"

I take a sip of my vanilla latte and replied, "Just to try something new and today happened to be my day off."

"I see," he says leaning on one of his elbows on the table.

I eat more of my croissant, but the employee continues to sit there and watch me. "Is there anything I can do for you?" I asked awkwardly. I don't know what to do in a situation like this, it has not happened before.

"Yeah," he said as I ate the last of my croissant. "I will be back." He got up and I turned around and there were people ready to order. I took this time by myself to drink so more of my latte before he returns. Maybe I can even leave before he has a chance to even say another word to me.

I just realized near the cup was a little folded piece of paper. I picked it up, unsure of what is written on it. Once unfolded all the way, I saw ten numbers written on it. "I see you found the note," someone from behind me said. I jumped up a little, the person surprising me. "Oh, I guess I never told you my name. I'm Cole." He sat back down in the seat he was sitting in earlier. "And that is my cell phone number."

Could he have a crush on me? As cute as he may look, I don't know if I want to call him my boyfriend. I barely even know him considering we just met today. The note fell from my hand and landed onto the tray. I didn't know how to respond anymore.

"Is everything okay," he asked me. The look on his face seemed to be worried.

"Yeah, everything is fine," I answered him. My voice sounded just the opposite since it was trembling. "I just realized I have to go," I say to him getting up from my seat. "Thank you again."

"Not a problem, just text me sometime," he said. I fast walked right past him and onto the streets. The raindrops were landing on me, something I don't remember happening earlier.

"Karin!" I heard someone shout as I walked on. I stopped, thinking if I should turn back around. When I looked behind me someone came running towards me with something over their head. "I think you forgot this," he said holding up the umbrella over my head. The small umbrella kept us close, it seemed like a miracle we both weren't getting wet.

"Thank you," I say to him again.

"You know, there's always something I wanted to do, but never find the right person or the right moment," he said.

"What's that?" I asked.

He closed the umbrella and put it on a nearby bench. "This," he said, then leaned in closing his eyes. His lips met mine, and I closed my eyes as well. A passionate kiss in the rain, how did I not see that coming?
