I don't even know why I used to believe in Nazi Germany. Just because I grew up there, my perspective was corrupted. I can see clearly now, however. The Allied Forces have brought me to the light. I now know that Germany took my best friend. She was brought to a concentration camp, but they lied. They said Britain took her. I can't believe that I ever believed their lies. I will get revenge.
It's so hard not to show my hatred. To act like I still agree with Nazism. It helps to misinform them, though. Even if they're just little pieces of information, it still brings an inner grin to my face knowing that Nazi Germany will fall. So far, I've just been acting behind the scenes. I haven't even forged or brought fake letters yet, just given fake information I've pretended to hear and some tape recorders. Today's my first day I've been chosen to deliver a fake letter. I know the risk, but I'm fully prepared to take it. To save my best friend, I will do anything. She is my everything. My sword, my shield...
"Agent Chameleon! The general wants to see you!" a voice cuts through my thoughts. I turn around to see Lieutenant Goren.
The general? He can't be serious.
Before I can respond, however, Lieutenant Goren interrupts. "You weren't writing, were you?" he asks.
"Of course not!" I reply, offended that he would even think that. "I know the risks."
"Good. Didn't think so," he responds curtly. He probably just had to make sure. After all, we don't have second chances. The risks are that high. If someone, just one person, found out...
My thoughts are interrupted again when I realise that Lieutenant Goren has started walking, expecting me to follow. I hurry after him, my short legs moving fast as I catch up to his tall form.
"Why does the general want to see me, Lieutenant Goren?" I question once I'm next to him again.
"No idea," he replies. I'm not expecting him to elaborate, so I'm shocked when he does. "It might have something to do with the next assignment." He says it so quietly that I almost don't hear it, like he's talking to himself.
I get so worked up about what the general could possibly want to see me for that I don't even notice we've arrived at the door to his office. That is until Lieutenant Goren says something.
"Little girl," he uses the nickname only he uses, his hand already on the polished brass doorknob. "Be careful, okay? Especially out there."
I nod, unable to say anything else, and Lieutenant Goren turns the knob, pushing open the door. As we enter, the door closes behind us.
"Ah, I see you've come back with Agent Chameleon, Goren," General Kuran speaks up. He's sitting behind a lovely maple wood desk currently occupied by a map of the territory held by both the Nazis and the Allies.
Lieutenant Goren bows and I quickly follow suit. I don't expect to hear the general laugh, however. His laugh is hearty and I can't help but wonder how he can have so much joy in his voice at a time like this.
"You two are the same! No need for such formalities. It is I who should be bowing to you," General Kuran states once his laughter is under control. We take that as a cue to lift our heads and Lieutenant Goren is asked to leave. Bowing once more slightly, he gives me a wink and a discreet thumbs up before exiting the office. I clasp my hands together worriedly in front of me, not able to help my nerves as I'm left alone with the general, even though I know Lieutenant Goren is on my side.
