CHAPTER EIGHT

LUNCH

Usually, for Sylvia Gale, lunch couldn't come fast enough. It was a time when she could crack open her worn Harry Potter books and get away from the crowded hallways and pressures of her life.

But today Sylvia was sitting with someone, and she didn't know how to feel about that.

When she walked into the student cafeteria Sylvia felt her palms become sweaty. Jughead was nice, he was funny and cute- Sylvia stopped walking and shut her eyes tightly, yes he was cute but she couldn't think Jughead was cute, not when he was becoming her friend.

She sucked in a deep breath before opening her eyes. Jughead was the first kid in this fucked up, crazyshack of a town that she'd spoken to outside of class and she was not about to mess it all up because she thought he had nice eyes.

She saw the beanie wearing boy at her usual table, his laptop was in front of him. He'd already gotten lunch.

"Hey," she set her bag on the table. Jughead looked up at her with a small smile. Sylvia smiled back at him and pretended that she hadn't thought his smile was cute.

"Hey, how was history?" Sylvia shrugged. She ran a hand through her hair, pulling at the ends.

"Fine, too easy to be honest. How was second period?" Jughead shrugged too.

"Alright, I had a sub." Sylvia couldn't help but smile as she snapped her fingers and muttered 'Lucky'.

"So," Sylvia leaned in over the table and lowered her voice, "Any leads on the Blossom murder?"

Jughead opened his mouth to speak when a two people, a blonde sophomore with bright blue eyes and a red headed male in a letterman jacket, sat down next to him.

"Hey Juggie," Betty smiled, "Sylvia." Both angsty teens flashed a smile at the cheerleader.

"Hey Jug, you don't mind, right?" Sylvia looked at Archie Andrews for a moment. She didn't see the appeal, his eyebrows were bushy and lips too thin and his muscles were weirdly bulgey for someone with a naturally lean body type.

"It's up to Sylvia," Jughead said. Sylvia resisted the urge to hit him- not hard, but more in a 'Thanks for putting me on the spot sort of way'.

Instead she shrugged, "Its whatever, I don't care." Only when Veronica Lodge and Kevin Keller both sat down seconds later she did care. The buzzing in the back of her mind was back and as one of her shoulders we're pressed against the jean material of Kevin's and the other was touching the tan arm of a former rich girl.

"Why is everyone at my table?" Sylvia wondered, her voice strained and the muscle in left cheek visibly strained.

"Because Betty and Archie are here," Kevin Keller said obviously. Jughead's foot gently knocked against hers under the table. More in a comforting way to show her that he was here for her if anything, than an accidental one.

"Archie wanted to sit here." Sylvia took a deep breath Betty answered because honestly she didn't want people to answer her, she wanted then to leave.

"Jugheads here."

"That's nice," Sylvia growled, "But space is kind of limited and honestly I didn't mind three people sitting with me, but fives a fucking crowd so how about the four I didn't invite to eat lunch with leave?" It wasn't a question. As her fists curled around the edge of the table she didn't leave any room for debate.

Though Veronica looked like she was about to argue until both Archie and Betty stood up, Kevin following their lead.

Once they were gone Sylvia could breath. Jughead didn't glare at her or snap, instead he looked at her with his head tilted back and an annoying analitical gaze.

"What?"

"What was that all about?" Jughead wondered. He didn't mind, he wasn't ready for Archie to be around him all the time like they'd been last year, nor did he want Betty being attached to his hip, or Kevin and Veronica following him around just because the former two were with him.

"Oh you know," Sylvia said with a false lightness in her voice, "How kids with Daddy issues get some times." Yes. No. More or less.

In Jughead's mind he was the poster child for kids with Daddy issues, but he didn't mind crowds. Sure he didn't like them but when everyone sat down Sylvia looked like she might either cry or straight up murder one of them and even Jughead knew he wasn't that bad.

So what the hell had happened to Sylvia Gale?

"Wanna watch my shit while I get lunch?" She asked him.

"Sure." She didn't bother to grab any money from her bag, instead she just got up and walked away, leading the writer to believe she got free lunch.

As Jughead Jones watched Sylvia Gale get on the back of the lunch line he couldn't help but sigh in frustration.

He hadn't been lying when he called her the biggest mystery next to Jason Blossom, and just like that case, he wanted to solve Sylvia Gale.
