Annie glanced at the clock and sighed. It was 10 pm and Paul wasn't home. Clearly this session was going to be an 'all nighter.' She checked everywhere was locked up and then went up to bed. Slipping out of the dress Paul had bought for her birthday celebrations that evening, she sat on the bed, tears in her eyes. In the two years she had been with him, she knew Paul's work came first but she had hoped for once, on her birthday, he could have come home at 6 pm as he'd promised! Just one evening devoted to her! Was it too much to ask?

She climbed into bed and after wondering, an not for the first time. whether she and Paul really  had a future together, she finally fell asleep. Several hours later she was awoken by Martha barking and the drunken shouts from Paul. Clearly he'd been out somewhere after the studio, their plans all but forgotten! Too hurt to even bother going to him, she stayed in bed.

"Hiya Annie!" He called as he entered the room, "Happy Birthday baby!"

She ignored him. He fell onto the bed, reeking of alcohol and clearly very drunk.

"Talk to me baby!" He tried to lift the covers from her.

"Get off me Paul!" she shouted angrily, "Go sleep in the other room!"

"You don't mean that." He grinned at her through bleary eyes.

"Yes I do!" She pulled the cover over herself and turned away once more.

"What's wrong with you?" He muttered, "I thought you'd be pleased to see me!"

She rounded on him. "You promised me faithfully you'd be home for 6 pm so that you could take me for dinner! For my birthday remember? It was you're idea! YOU made the restaurant booking and bought me that lovely dress to wear! YOU! Clearly getting pissed with the lads was a better option than spending the evening with me! Thanks Paul!"

The memory of the plans he'd made finally got through his drunken fog. "Oh Annie love, I'm so sorry! I completely forgot! I'll make it up to you, I promise. We'll go out tomorrow instead, how does that sound?"

"No thanks!"

"Oh Annie," He snuggled up to her, "I love you so much! I'm sorry... I got side tracked with some new songs me and John were..."

"Just drop it Paul! I don't want to hear it!"

"Don't be an angry with me baby. I love you." He kissed the back of her neck, "Let me make it up to you. His hands slipped under the covers and reached for her breasts.

"Get off Paul! The last thing I want is you groping me!"

"Please baby....I'm sorry." By now he was under the cover with her, his erection pressing into her back.

"NO!"

He continued to grope her.

"Get off me!" She pushed him away and got out of the bed. "I don't want sex with you in that state. I'll go and sleep in the other room."

She turned and went out on the landing. He followed her.

"Aww come on baby. It'll do us both good!"

"NO!"

He grabbed her, pinning her to the wall. He tried to kiss her. She struggled against him, pushing him away. From no where he raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face. The impact caused her to fall. She hit the floor, banging her head on a side table as she went down. The room spun for a moment.

"SHIT! Are you alright?" Paul was on the floor next to her, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you!"

"You hit me! Why?" Annie said, holding her head in her hands. "You said you've never hit me again after last time!"

"I'm sorry ...I don't know why I did. Forgive me!"

"Go away Paul."

"Let me help you up then." He took her hand and helped her to stand, "You're bleeding!"

He reached over to lift her hair from the cut caused by banging her head. Annie turned away from him.

"Don't!"

"I just want to help."

"LEAVE ME ALONE!" She pushed passed him and headed down stairs. She could hear Paul calling after her. She grabbed her car keys and left the house.

"Where are you going?" Paul knocked on the driver's window, "Please Annie, don't leave me! I love you!"

Ignoring his calls, she drove the car out of the drive way and down the street. By the end of the road she stopped and filled with an overwhelming sadness, she sobbed into her hands. She jumped as there was another knock on her driver's window. She looked up to find a police officer looking at her.

"Are you alright madam?" he asked.

Annie recognised him as the regular beat officer in the area. She lowered her window very slightly.

"I'm...I'm fine officer."

"You're sure?"

She nodded. "I've just had some bad news. I was composing myself before I continued to drive."

"Very sensible." The officer tipped his hat to her, "As long as you are alright, I'll leave you in peace."

"Thank you."

By the time Annie pulled into the familiar drive way, her head was throbbing. Cutting the engine she looked at the house. The whole place was in total darkness. Not wanting to disturb the sleeping family, especially young Julian, Annie locked the car doors and fell asleep.
