Darkness. Complete darkness surrounds Stiles as he falls deeper into the water.

His ears pop from the pressure change as Stiles body sinks deeper and deeper under the water. He feels the water temperature drop but it doesn't effect his body. If anything the change is actually welcomed. Familiar even.

Without opening his eyes he lets all his other senses takes control. His earlobes disappears leaving only holes where his ears were. His hearing increases and he can hear the small 'swish' sound from the movement going on around him. He can faintly make out the noises outside of the water. The birds chirping, the rustle of the leaves that they make when the gust of winds hits them.

When he starts to make out the shapes in front of him he knows that his eyes have grown. Not like an anime character, they look just like a real seals. He checks his surroundings and gasps when he catches sight of all different kind of fishes and water plants around him. It had been so long since he's seen anything like it. The school of different fish swim all over the place not paying attention to him as if him being there is normal. Plants sway along with the current of the water. The enchanted lake is filled with all kind of different sea creatures and plants from all over the world. Fish swim next to him brushing their fins across his skin.

Now that he can finally see he looks down at his body an notices that his skin has turned a deep dark blue, his skin is a couple shades darker than his moms. Hers was a soft sky blue with darker spots around her shoulder and arms, her tail started out a light blue on her hips and turned darker the closer they got to the tip of her tail. Stiles noticed that his shoulders are also covered in spots darker than his now blue skin. His eyes travel down his torso and land on his hips. Where his body is now transformed and is part animal.

His tail moves in a steady beat. The color the same dark blue as the spots covering his shoulders and arms.

His face begins to itch like crazy but then stops after the small whiskers grow. He uses the sensitive whiskers to see if he can detect any prey in the murky water but finds nothing but he still takes a look around just in case there's something hiding out there. His mom would tell him takes of how hunters would use other water creatures to either kill them or take their skins to keep them as prisoners.

Many of Selkie stories are about how a man finds and steals the skin of Selkie women and then forces her to marry him. Without her skin the woman is stuck on land without a way to turn back and join her clan in the ocean. In most stories the female later finds her skin and returns back to the ocean and leaves the man alone with her kids (something that Stiles never understood because why would she leave her own flesh and blood with a man that took her freedom. His mom said that she would explain when he was older but she never got the chance.) But in real life they are kept as prisoners. They are used as entertainment, slavery and even for experiments. Some witches capture them for their bodies, they use them as part of whichever spell or ritual they want to make.

After he's done checking his surroundings and is satisfied with how good his senses are working he closes the special contracting nose muscle that allows him to seal his nose like a sea lion and dives deeper into the water.

Only being able to stay underwater for no more than twenty minutes he swims back up and breaths in air basking in the sun for a bit before going back in to explore and relearn the bottom of the lake.

He spends a good couple of hours letting loose and for once and forgets about the outside world. He forgets about the tension between his dad, the awkwardness that keeps building between him and Scott. The emptiness in his heart,or how Beacon Hills is actually a beacon that will attract the supernatural now and the unanswered text messages from Derek.

Derek. It had only been a couple of months since the older man had suddenly left with his sister without a goodbye but to Stiles it felt like a lifetime has passed since the last time he had seen him.

Sure there was the occasional postcard or letter with no return address to let him know where they were but it wasn't anywhere close to enough. He wanted to hear Derek's voice, he wants to be able to talk to the man face to face. He wants to be able to see Derek's face so that he can look past the rough exterior and read his true feelings through his eyes instead of reading his letters and not knowing what he's really thinking.

Surfacing he lets himself float on his back and think lets him mind think about Derek. He wonders where he's at, what's he doing, if they found whatever it is that they left for, if maybe they found a permanent place to stay. After an hour of driving himself mad with all the questions bouncing around in his head he swims to the shore and takes off his skin.

The transformation is easier than when he was little but it's also harder because a part of him doesn't want to return to the 'human world.' He wants to stay here and live in the water with all the other water creatures. He doesn't want to have to worry about anything but he knows that he can't so picking up his skin he makes his way back to the cabin.

Later that night Stiles walks into his house glad for once that his dad isn't home. He had thought that now that his father knew about all the supernatural things going on that their father and son relationship would be fixed but other than there being no secrets nothing has changed. The Sheriff still worked all the time and Stiles likes to think that he's used to it but every night that his dad calls to says he won't be home for dinner Stiles gets depressed and shuts himself in his room.

He wonders what life would be like if his mom was still alive. Did she know about the Hales. Would she have had liked his friends, made snacks when he was younger, gone to his lacrosse games. Would his dad be home more often.

He bets that life would be much easier with her by his side. Everyday he's reminded of her when he look in the mirror and sees her same eyes on him or whenever he gets that itch under his skin whenever he's close to a body of water.

But he only has his dad and even though he loves his father he wishes that he would stop working just for a second and spend some time with him. But today was different, he was glad that his father wasn't home. That way he wouldn't know where Stiles had gone. He wouldn't know that Stiles had gone to the lake and turned into his true form after years of denying himself the release.

Transforming was like taking in a deep fresh breath after holding it in for so long and he decided while driving back that it was time to stop pretending to be something he's not. He's not human, he never was and he never will be. It's time for him to embrace the fact that he's never going to live a normal life.

And maybe that's not such a bad thing.

(A/N)
~ I spend about two hours reading about seals and sea lions and until yesterday I thought that they were the same animal.
In the Celtic stories the Selkies fully turned into seals there was no half human/half seal thing but I kinda like the idea of Stiles looking like a merman.

~ next chapter is about Derek :O poor Derek being kidnapped D: he must have done something terrible in his past life for all the shit that keeps happening to him.
