"Fear doesn't shut you down, it wakes you up." -- Tobias Eaton, Divergent.
In futuristic California, everything has changed.
At first when you think of California, you think of hot weather, Hollywood and happiness right? Well, everything changed and now, everything's disastrous.
Everything is different. Now, California isn't even California, but a state named Vordel. Vordel is run by the F.E.A.R., the Federal Expressive Acme Regency, a group of officials who never reveal anything to the citizens of Vordel and are emotionless which is rather ironic to their label. They are the superiors of Vordel and have been ranked the highest, since they are composed and sophisticated.
Aveline Apcott is crazy, insane even, along with her parents. They have been ranked the lowest because of their obnoxious and loud attitude, but they don't mind being slaves to the F.E.A.R., doing extra work and labour. All that matters is that they're happy.
Graysen Charrette is Aveline's other half. Yes, they're best friends and they get along well, but his mother, Lea Charrette, is the co-founder of the F.E.A.R. making her strong-willed, powerful and ignorant to anyone below her. However, Graysen could care less. He chooses to hang out with Aveline and her parents, simply because it makes him happy.
As if things aren't miserable enough, a mysterious virus breaks out and affects everyone with it. Doctors are puzzled as this invincible virus and wreaks havoc around the state. Hysterius Hyperphilius -- or HHP for short -- gets inhaled and their particles travels until they get the brain, targeting the citizens' worst fears and causes everyone to have hallucinations. Soon enough, Vordel is a living nightmare.
Everyone around Graysen is affected by HHP. Everyone; everyone except him. He should be happy, right? But it's not fun when you see all your loved ones suffer.
As Graysen tries to help Aveline get over HHP, they never would have expected they would find out the F.E.A.R.'s worst secrets that might eventually destroy Vordel. In the meantime, Aveline eventually learns what it's like to be fearless.
"To me, Fearless is not the absense of fear. It's not being completely unafraid. To me, Fearless is having fears. Fearless is having doubts. Lots of them. To me, Fearless is living in spite of those things that scare you to death." -- Taylor Swift
