No, he was just getting something out of his eye.

You all stood in a large floor space while a short red headed lady took the centre.

Pop music started to play and everyone started swinging their arms in time to it.

Obviously they did the same warm up every time, which you had no idea about.

It was like a dancing roulette, every time you thought they were going to do one warm up they did another.

Needless to say, you struggled to keep up.

When it was finally over and you felt more tired and embarrassed than before, the director called everyone to grab a seat again.

You took hold of your previous chair and sat to the far left so you were away from everyone else.

"We're just going to do a quick singing warm up and then we'll get on to learning the audition pieces" the director said, nodding to a flamboyant  man who sat behind a piano.

He smiled at everyone before he started playing a scale on the piano.

You knew this one, you'd done it at school all the time. You happily chirped along to the rising melody, feeling confident about what you were doing.

When the warm up was over the director pressed a button on the stereo and music started playing.

"This is the chorus and dancer audition piece" he said softly.

Wait, I know this song! This is the Lion King!

You beamed as you heard the familiar tune, it was  The Circle of Life. A weird choice for a chorus song but you weren't judging.

When the music stopped the director spoke again "Everyone must audition for a chorus member, then people who want to go for individual roles or a dancer will have to do a second audition to their specific songs"

"What if we want to be a dancer and a character?" You said before you could stop yourself.

Everyone looked round at you as though it was obvious. Way to make someone feel welcome!

"If you want to audition for a main role then you have to do the dancer audition regardless, it's just easier to learn the chorus and dancer movement and the vocals and lines for your character" the director explained, he seemed really really nice compared to everyone else.

That's confusing, I'll talk to him afterwards just to make sure I understand.

The choreographer stood up and handed everyone a sheet, it had the words to the song on them. You took a quick glance at them to refresh your memory but you were pretty confident that you knew the word to every song in The Lion King back to front and front to back.

You all went through the first verse and chorus and then the music stopped, you thought they were going to go into the next verse so you had prepared yourself to sing it, luckily you were able to stop any noise coming out of your mouth before you embarrassed yourself.

The choreographer stood again and handed out another piece of paper, this one had the names of the characters on it and a song designated to each. You looked over them, trying to decide if you were going to go for any of them.

Simba + Nala - The Love Tonight
Scar - Be Prepared
Timon + Pumba - Hakuna Mattata
Zazu - Just Cant Wait to Be King
Mufasa - Non-Singing
Rafiki - Non-Singing
Sarabi - Non-Singing
Shenzi, Banzai + Ed - Non-Singing
Sarafina - Non-Singing

It seemed simple enough, you were scanning through all the characters when music started playing again.

They had started to go through the audition pieces for the characters, naturally the first one was Simba and Nala's song.

The cheesy love song.

Secretly you loved this one, it was one of your favourites. Timon and Pumba's bit had gone and it was the dramatic build up to the vocals.

As soon as it kicked in, everyone started singing, you quickly joined them and sang along.

The chorus bit had finished and Simba's solo line was coming, you stopped singing because obviously you didn't want to go for Simba. It would be too much pressure to have a main part for your first show.

A couple of male voices sang out "So many things to tell her, but how to make her see, the truth about my past? Impossible, she'd turn away from me" they all mixed in together but one voice was beautiful, it stood out from the rest but you couldn't put a face to it.

You assumed all the girls would sing along to Nala's part so you took a deep intake of breath.

"He's holding back, he's hiding" you sang, but it was only you and one other girl. You felt the blood rush to your cheeks but you couldn't stop yourself.

"But what? I can't decide" you continued, the other girl trying to outsing you, but you could hear the strain in her voice.

"Why won't he be the King I know he is?" You prepared yourself for the high note and concentrated on staying in tune.

"The King I see inside" you belted, you hit the note perfectly but the other girl's voice wavered and cracked.

The stereo stopped and there was a moment of silence.

What did I do wrong?

Some people were looking at you like you'd kicked a puppy, they were mainly the women, and others were looking at you with surprised expressions.

It wasn't hard to tell who that other voice was singing with you, it was a middle-aged woman who had her hair pulled back so tightly in a bun that it looked as though he scalp was going to peel off.

How you knew it was her was because she was scowling at you, as much as she could with the temporary face-lift her bun was giving her.

"So" the director spoke "That is the audition piece for Simba and Nala" he continued.

Time dragged by incredibly slowly as you went through the other audition pieces, you decided not to sing along anymore invade you messed up again.

You'd come to realise that you only sang if you were going to audition for that part, you'd just wished someone had told you that beforehand.

You've reached the end of published parts.
