MY LAMENT IN LIFE

Marry McKenna hurried to the bathroom and
took an anxious look in the mirror. If she was
going to win Jesse’s heart over that night, she
knew that she’d have to dress to impress.
On the evening of the Valentine’s ball, Marry
freshened up and admired her curvy figure in
the mirror wearing the red dress that she had
bought for herself with her saved up allowance
from the past six months.
“Marry, you look adorable!” My mom exclaimed
with delight as Marry’s dad raised an
apprehensive eyebrow at the length of her
dress.
“I feel adorable,” Confessed Marry  with a grin.
The truth was, it was the first time that she’d
ever felt like a real princess.

After Marry’s mom took photos of her from
every different angle, Mrs. McKenna finally

subsided to her daughter’s whining, and headed
out the front door.
The drive to school felt unusually long that night
considering the fact they lived only three blocks
away from the high school, Kelmscott High.
Before Marry’s dad began his usual ranting about
keeping in touch, Marry stepped out of the car
and into the cool night breeze. Marry felt a
sudden rush of anxiousness to get to the school
hall. Marry waved to her parents said as they
drove off into the moonlight.
Marry wondered once again why she couldn’t
just be dropped off by her date, like all the other
girls in her class. After all, she was in 10th grade!
Marry slowly started to feel at unease as she held
the Valentine’s gift in both hands, wondering
whether or not she should indeed risk all dignity
by giving it to my crush, Jesse. Marry headed
towards the school gymnasium, where the
Valentines prom was to be held, when she felt
showering raindrops falling around her.

As she stepped into the gym, she was hugely
amazed at the beauty of the twinkling lights and
the roses that ornamented the gym.
Marry spent the next few minutes searching for
Jesse through the horde of swaying bodies on
the dance floor. Right before she was about to
give up hope of finding him, she froze when she
saw something that made her heart sink.
Jesse kissing another girl.
Marry was glad no one was close enough to
notice her tear stained face as she rushed out of
the hall and ran all the way home.
Looking back now, she realized that maybe we
just weren’t meant to be.
