The unusual pair

Chapter 1

Darin's Point of View

I wake up in the morning. I have no will to get up. Too early for this.

I finally get out of my comfortable bed and take a shower. I drown in my thoughts. I almost fall asleep and I hear a banging on the door

"Darin, hurry your ass up or you'll be late for school again!"

My mom was definitely not a morning person and didn't take shit from anyone. If I'm late again, this will be the 16th time I've been late this month.

I get finished in the shower and put on a black t-shirt and a faded pair of jeans. I part my hair to the side like I always do and go downstairs.

As soon as I get to the bottom of the staircase, my mom is motioning me to go out the door. Guess I have to skip breakfast again.

I walk outside and get in the car. The car ride to school is silent. I arrive at school and open the door.

"Bye Darin! Have a good day." I nod and close the car door and walk off. I see my friend Lucas and wave at him.

He notices me and walks, "Hey you're not late for once." I manage to let out a small laugh. "Yeah, surprisingly." Lucas furrows his eyebrows. "You probably came earlier so you can get a good look at Beth didn't ya"? I look at him annoyed, I'm too tired for any of this. I need coffee

Lucas pats me on the back and says, "Who pissed in your cereal this morning? Lighten up man, I heard tonight there's going to be a huge party and everyone is invited. I also heard Beth was going."

I smile at the thought of Beth. She's too popular and pretty to ever notice me. "Lucas, a girl like her would never talk to me. I have no chance with her."

Lucas sighed, "Just have confidence and don't be awkward, and don't do anything that would make you look like a dumbass alright"?

"I make no promises." I hear the bell ring and walk to first period, which is science. Lucas walks in a different direction. I walk into the classroom and see Beth talking and giggling with her other friends. I take a seat in the back of the class. Our teacher Mr. Howard walks in.

"Good morning everyone." He has such a boring and monotone voice. I hate it, and he wonders why every one falls asleep in his class.

"Today we are going to start our group project." Everyone groans

"Shut up or you all get lunch detention and you can do your work then." Everyone is quiet and listens

"I'll assign your partners." Mr. Howard goes down the list of names and tells everyone who they are going to be with. Then I hear my name

"Darin, um, lets see, you'll be with Beth."

Beth turns around and looks at me. I try to smile at her and she waves at me and walks over to me.

"So I guess we'll be working together."

I stutter, "Y-yeah I guess so."

She smiles, "Well, maybe sometime this week we can work on it outside of school so we have more time to get it finished."

I nod in agreement. She starts to walk off, and I ask her a question.

"Hey, um, Beth, are you going to that party tonight? I heard some people talking about it."

"Yeah I am, it's at my house actually. You should come, it's gonna be fun."

"Alright then, I guess I'll see you there." She nods and walks off.

Mr. Howard explains the project we have to do for the rest of the class. The bell rings and I get up to leave. I notice Lucas by his locker.

"Lucas, guess what"?

"What"?

"Beth and I got put in a group to do a science project together. I also talked to her about that party tonight. She said its going to be at her place."

"That's good then. That's one way to get closer to her. Party is gonna be awesome."

Lucas walks away and down the hall. I'm excited to see her tonight.
