Sarah

I was sitting there, alone in front of one section of the wall. Crying until my eyes hurt. I’m officially alone in this world. I stood up, hoping to find a way out.  Clutching a sword in my hand, I try to keep my balance by holding on to the wall with my other one. Fatigue sets in, even though I’ve been knocked out for who knows how long. I checked my watch, it’s November 3rd. I was out for two days. I look up and spot a cover but it was stuck. “I guess I’m stuck here” I muttered. As I walked a bit more, I heard a sound coming from a corner. I silently unsheathed the sword, and quietly stepped forward.  “h-hello? I-is anyone there? Show yourself!” I called. Noting replied but a small groan. I quickly slashed but I stopped half way near the thing’s head. It’s not a zombie, it’s a boy. A teenage boy.  He looks just about my age. He’s also frightened and confused as I am.

“yo! Watch it!” he shouted. His hands over his face. “I’m sorry” I said, putting the sword back in its sheath. “I thought you were one of those things” I said, holding out my hand. He took it and stood up. Well, he’s obviously taller than me. About a few inches I think. “the name’s Sarah” I said, shaking his hand. “Tadashi” he quietly said. His hands are warm, and his face is covered in ashes. I guess where he came from, a fire started. We decided to walk together to find a way to get out. After a few minutes of walking, we found another cover, luckily it’s almost open. Tadashi  said that he’ll open it. I watched as he tried twisting it a bit. When he managed to twist it open, I decided to look first. As I climbed the small iron ladder, he shouted. I jumped down to see that my new friend was being dragged by a zombie.

“help!” he shouted, his fingers trying to hold on to a piece of a cement block. I dashed to the zombie and quickly sliced it in half. I helped Tadashi up he was gripping on my arm, his hands shaking. “you ok?” I asked, looking into his eyes, which is filled with terror and fright. I let him go up first and he helped me up into the empty streets. “where are we?” I asked. He was scanning the area and his face quickly lit up. “I know this place, come with me” he said, holding my arm and bringing me to a house. “this is my parents’ lab, they work on their experiments here, and also they have vacation here” he said, typing a code on a keyboard of numbers. When he finished, the gate opened and the electric shock on the door shut off. “come on in” he said, extending his arm. I laughed a bit and walked. When we got in, he typed a code again and the security was back on.

“my parents are scientists.” He said, sitting on the couch. “they go here in America to do research, and vacation. I’m here for studies” his head low. I placed the sword on the table in the middle and sat beside him. “where are your parents now?” I asked. “back home, thank goodness they’re not here” he replied, looking up. “I see, you must be lucky” I said, looking away. “I lost my parents in this incident, they told me to escape” I started, holding back tears. “even my brother’s gone” I think he can see that I’m close to crying. He took me in his arms and gave me a tight hug. I looked up and saw him smiling at me. “you can cry if you want to, I mean… you got to do it soon” he said, his smile reassuring me of safety. And with that, I let my tears flow and cried. His hand patting my head lightly.

Night falls and he showed me a room. “you can sleep here, my bed’s over there at the other side of the room” he said, preparing my bed. “and don’t worry about your clothes, my mom probably has some clothes that don’t fit her anymore” I looked around the room, portraits, paintings, pictures and a TV  decorated the room.  The house’ style is somehow oriental but western.  There were several rooms too. Tadashi gave me a small tour. The lab, living room, bedrooms, etc. but what really caught my eye was the training room. It appears that his parents also make weapons for the military and also for training. I saw a family portrait on a table in the training room. It was a picture of him and another boy in their training outfits. The other boy’s face was ripped out, when I asked him who it was, his face darkened. “he’s just a traitor” he said, and walked out the room.

I went back to the bedroom and see him already asleep on the other side of the room. I sat on the bed and looked outside. Groans and other creepy sounds echo through the night. My mind’s still trying to process what just happened. But, if I didn’t meet this boy, I would’ve been eaten by a zombie. The idea scares me.  I guess it’s that thing people call: “A Fateful Encounter”

The next day, Tadashi and I stayed in the lab. “this shot was made by dad” he said, showing me a big needle doctors use. It’s filled with red liquid in the glass cylinder. “it’s meant to give you immunity from any bite, scratch or any other damages made by weird creatures” he said, stepping closer to me. I stepped back, my fear of needles raging inside me. “I-I um… I can’t..” I stuttered. “just the sight of those kinds of needles make me sick” I looked away, hiding the blush of embarrassment from my face.  He laughed a bit. “wh-why are you laughing?” I asked. The blush still fixed on my face. “you’re blushing haha” he smiled. “cute” the blush on my face deepens. “wh-what? Um.. uh…” I looked away. He took my arm and injected the fluid in my arm. I let out a small shout of pain but I let the rest out through my tears. “aww c’mon, it’s just like an ant bite” he said, drying my tears. “yeah.. a painful one” I said, closing my eyes to stop crying. “hey, don’t close your eyes, let the world see how pretty they are” he said. I opened them and laughed. Later that day, I found out that Tadashi and I have a lot in common. He and I enjoy the same activities and hobbies. But, he’s more of the type to protect no matter what.

“hey! Let’s look for survivors!” he said, bolting up from the couch. “survivors? Are you sure there’s any?” I asked, still sitting down.  “ofcourse there are!” he said, pulling me up. “how will we look around? I mean… zombies would have gotten us by the time we reach the 3rd house on foot” I said. A smirk shone on his face. “walk? Who said we were walking?” he said. A few minutes later, I was blindfolded and led outside. “ok open it” he said, letting go of my hand. I removed the blindfold and find myself in front of a red car. It looks old, but it looks armored too.

I looked at Tadashi who had a big smile across his face. “wait.. you can drive?” I asked. “yeah” he replied. “oh yeah, you might need this” he tossed my sword at me. As I caught it, a shout emanated from the end of the street.
