I fidgeted with my little locket that rested between my collar bones. It was an unconscious habit that I did when I was thinking. There was something really odd or should I say off about my life. Maria had dozed off and the cat was nowhere to be seen. The lights had been turned off and the room was enveloped in darkness. A sliver of moonlight falling across Maria's room. Her light snores were sort of comforting.

Do you why me and Maria are best friends? Probably because she's a great listener, and an incredible person in general. Maria's father had died in an accident, an accident in which her mother and she herself was involved. But they were lucky, they made it through. But her father was already dead when the medics reached them. The worst part is, she saw him die, and she couldn't do anything about it, as she lay helpless on the ground. After her father was gone, her mother used to seek comfort in her daughter. That was why Maria was a good listener. All these years she has listened to whatever her mother had to say.

My mind wandered off to random things. Like how I had trouble opening Maria's room window. Damn, they need to change those locks. And oh how people in high school act like I'm a ghost. Like they didn't see me when they clearly bumped my shoulder and how I hate when they just look past me. Huh, school life, not too great for me. I don't think my parents will notice for a few days that I'm gone because they seldom come home or to my room. Till then I can stay at Maria's. But I will have to face my family one day, and that one day will come soon. And that day I will ask.
