Happy Birthday, Deshi. (A Fenshi One-Shot)

This is dedicated to otakuhappymeals ; today (April 19) is Deshi's birthday, so it's a present for both his creator and the young bean himself.

<<>>

There are only two days until Deshi's birthday and Feng has absolutely no idea what to get him. Being his best friend, he knows the basic things that a boy like Deshi would want: manga, anime figurines, posters, and the such and such that comes with him being a big otaku. However, he is turning eighteen, and Feng has no inkling on what to get someone he has known for over a decade.

He glances at the boy he is thinking of, who is bent over his desk and scribbling notes furiously. Maybe Feng should focus because there is a month until finals and math is his weakest class but he is more interested in observing Deshi.

He thinks back to when he first met the boy, eleven years ago. Deshi was a scruffy kid, with too-big brown eyes and messy, dark hair and a smile that still makes Feng grin without a second thought. At the time, Deshi was more shy and self-conscious, something Feng found adorable.

Feng chews on his pencil and forces his gaze back to his mostly-empty paper. Based on the fact that Mika, who is seated in front of him, is on her second page of notes, he has missed a lot. He can just copy from Mika later.

"Mr. Xiu? Are you paying attention? Mr. Xiu? Feng!" Miss Tambella is practically screaming his name from the front of the room, her thick eyebrows raised. She is leaning over her desk, lip pulled between her teeth and eyes narrowed.

"Um, sorry, Miss Tambella," he says quickly, ignoring Deshi's snickering.

The woman rolls her eyes and turns back to the Smart board and continues with the notes.

By the end of class, Feng has learned nothing and still has no ideas on a gift for Deshi. Before Yumi can leave, he snags her backpack and yanks her back. Naturally, Mika stays as well, turning to look at Feng with her 'I-will-kick-you-in-the-balls-no-matter-what-you-say' look.

Deshi, being the nosy guy he is, turns to Feng as well with a questioning look on his face. "What's up, Feng?" He asks, looking down at him with that big-eyed, innocent look.

"Go, be free my small bird friend." Feng says smoothly, giving Deshi a gentle shove. "This is about your birthday."

The boy lights up at the mention of his special day and goes off with stars in his eyes and a grin on his face.

Feng finds himself grinning at the sight.

Yumi nudges him and gives him a look he can't decipher. She nudges him again as if the second time with make it more clear, this time with the point of her elbow in his ribs.

"What?" He finally says, pouting and rubbing at the spot where she elbowed him. "What did I do? Is it because I didn't get him a gift yet?" He asks, "because that's what I want to talk about."

Mika and Yumi share a look and Feng feels left out, a feeling he only gets without Deshi around. He whines like a dog and paws at Mika's hair until she turns to kick him in the shin. "You haven't bought him a gift yet." She says, sounding unsurprised and annoyed.

"No! I still have 52 hours until his exact birth." He complains, rubbing his shin where she kicked him.

Mika rolls her eyes but lets it go. "Well, it's the big 18, so get him something good, you know? Something he doesn't have, or whatever." She sounds completely nonchalant and relaxed, a deep contrast to the panicked chaos occurring in Feng's brain.

He manages a nod before shooting out of the classroom, backpack slung uncomfortably over one shoulder. He finds Deshi standing starry-eyed outside of the classroom, clutching the newest volume of the manga Dimensions. Nudging his shoulder, Feng falls into an easy pace next to them as they head to lunch, smiling.

Now to find a gift for the boy...

Feng sighs and digs through the pile of black shirts he is investigating in Hot Topic. Deshi already has most of them, and the ones he doesn't are from shows he has no interest in. He moves on to key chains and finds himself searching for something for himself. He curses and leaves the store in a hurry, spotting none other than Lora Sobbs standing at the rack of tees.

He manages to duck out undetected and wanders for a while, trying to get a good idea. Nothing is coming, so he finally sighs angrily. He has thirty minutes until Deshi's surprise party that isn't really a surprise because a party is not a surprise if one's friends throw it year after year at the same time in the same location.

Feng checks the time again as he arrives at Spencer's and curses, seeing he has to leave soon or else he will be late, which doesn't work out well with a surprise party.

He can't believe in, he turned up without a gift. To his defense, he tried, but trying is never enough.

Feng is crouched behind his usual couch near the front door of his house, as Deshi's party is always thrown at Feng's, and Feng's is always thrown at Deshi's. He tenses as the door unlocks, and jumps the couch a moment too early.

His foot catches on the couch's sloped back and he ends up sprawled on his back on the ground. Deshi dashes in a moment later and gracelessly falls on top of Feng.

They are nose-to-nose, and suddenly Feng is all too aware of how attractive the boy before him is, with his dark eyes and dark hair and olive skin. He is so real and natural and there, it is overwhelming.

"Happy birthda..." the others are awkwardly getting up to cheer a moment too late. They trail off, seeing the birthday boy's position. Deshi somehow rights himself, but they are still close.

And suddenly it hits Feng: something Deshi hasn't had. Something new.

Deshi is pulling away when Feng grabs his shirt collar and yanks him back down to connect lips in an awkward smash, teeth clashing. But Deshi actually tastes good and his lips are soft and Feng asks himself why they haven't done it before.

The boy on top is bracing his arms to not fall on Feng, but he falls anyway, probably from surprise. The pain and 'oof' that comes from his rapid descent breaks the moment and the two boys separate like fire has torn a line between them. However, Feng's lips still tingle with the taste of Deshi Tanemura, and he grins at the boy.

"Happy birthday, Deshi."

A/N: Okay this was like super rushed because it's 23:38 and I'm exhausted and rushing because there's only like 22 minutes left in the day.. Thanks for reading, I'll go back and edit it better later. All my love to Deshi bby and his mother chicken queen, Miamo.
