Stars that fell

She bathed him in warmth
Because he was so
Dark and cold
to her touch but
She didn't realise
When her hands got
Colder and her eyes, dimmer.

He pulled her close because
She was warm and he was not.
He saw the stars in her eyes
Fade and the warmth
leak out of her skin
and Into him.
But when he went
To pull away he found that
He could not
because he was selfish
and she was not.

His fingers latched on to hers
So tightly they became roots
That dug into her and entwined
Them together.
Until she couldn't move,
Couldn't leave.

They told her she needed to
Walk away, go
Because she was giving too much
And he was toxic.
Because when his venom latched
Onto her, it would spread,
Destroy, eat at her, sap
Her warmth and blow out her lights.

They didn't notice
Her fists clenching and
Her heart cracking
For her and for him.
Because she was too late
To save and he,
He could not be saved
Even if the stars dimmed
All their lights just so
He could be warm.

He traced her skin
With empty promises and
Cold apologies
Forged from guilt and sorrow.
He pretended it was not
Painful to feel his warm hands
Become cold at the touch of her skin
Because she was like ice.
And he was grateful her eyes
Were not open to see himself
Staring back at him in her dull
Starless eyes.

They wept for the tragedy
That befell poor, sweet
Callisto because she made the mistake
Of falling in love with too much darkness.
And it engulfed her, because even if
He loved her too, he couldn't
Help but steal away all her lights
Because he loved her a little too much

To let her go.
