Prologue
"Oh baby doll.... Come out come out wherever you are." The sugar sweet voice echoed through the room, causing the hair on the back of my neck to stand on edge. My hands were trembling terribly as they felt along the wall, trying to come in contact with anything that could help save me. That voice..... So familiar yet so un heard of. I couldn't even begin to explain how I knew it.
A laugh followed a bit after the cold words left the woman's mouth, the sound of a hyena in my opinion. Soon enough footsteps could be heard from a mile away, even with the water that was ankle high on my legs. The footsteps were fading, meaning that the woman gave up? Maybe I'd get lucky.. But then there was a squeaking noise, followed by the sound of running water.
"Oh baby doll no! No you can't do that!" A different voice shrieked, causing me to jump, and then freeze. That voice I would know from anywhere.
"Mommy?" As young and innocent as I was, I still half expected what was coming next. I didn't want to, I denied it as much as possible, but I knew.
The water was now at my knees, and rising rather quickly. My breathing quickened as I started moving, trying to get away.
But that was my mistake.
"So there you are...." The other voice giggled, and then a flashlight made contact with my temple. I was down quick, falling into the water with a splash. Being only seven I had no way of suspecting what was coming, and the impact had a major toll on me. I heard my mommy shriek, and I heard her cry, but I was under the water, falling deeper and deeper until I hit the ground. Amazing how fast a room can fill, right?
But I wouldn't give up. I just had to feel around for the flashlight, and I just had to slowly stand from the water. My entire body was shaking now, both from the cold and from fear.
"Leave. My. Mommy. Alone!" I scram the last part, turning on the flash light and looking around the room until I found the kidnapper. My hand raised before I could comprehend what I was doing, I threw it, hard.
I heard it splash as it hit the water, not making contact with my target. Though the light did land in a position to show me where they were, what they were doing. My mother was hanging from the ceiling, hands tied above her head.
I let out a scream, taking in her appearance. Her body was bruised and bloody, a wretched sight. The lady behind her laughed, dancing out from behind her causing water to splash all around.
"Oh Ashy... So stupid." Her voice changed from sweet to cold once she ended the sentence. Footsteps sounded once again, causing my eyes to widen in utter fear. Now who could it be? I wish I never found out.
My daddy was walking down the stairs, a big knife in his hands. He had a wicked smirk plastered across his face as he splashed down into the water. He made his way to the lady, his arm snaking around her waist which caused my mommy to let out a sob.
I was so confused, so oblivious to what was happening.
"Baby why don't you finish the job." The lady purred, her hand lifting to point at my mommy. My daddy nodded, his hand holding the knife following the lady's pointing finger right before-
I jolted awake with a scream, my entire body shaking. The room I was in was freezing, the fan on full blast as I sat in the dark. Another scream left my lips, followed by a sob, and then another, and another. Tears streamed down my pale cheeks as I tried to grasp onto reality, tried to forget the look on my mother's face in her dying hour.
Someone knocked on my door rather forcefully, demanding an entrance. The door was locked, I had locked it before I fell asleep last night because I don't want my dad to find me. I don't want him to hurt me. He's out there, I just know it.
"Ash please open up. Please." A voice pleaded, muffled by the door to the point that I wasn't able to recognize it. Especially not with my sobs echoing through the room. I curled up into a ball, hugging my knees to my chest as the pounding increased. It reminded me of the dream... Me not being able to pinpoint who was talking to me.
"Go Away!" I scram, worried that maybe the lady had found me. If she did.... It's been five years.... She shouldn't be able to find me. They shouldn't still be looking. The pounding on the door stopped for a few seconds, and then the door opened. They must have picked the lock.
Another scream left my mouth as I cowered back against the headboard, the sobs racking through my body. I heard whoever it was footsteps as she made her way over to me, another concerned voice sounding from the doorway.
"Ashton calm down." I was able to tell who it was now, and it was Gemma. She is the lady in charge at the moment while her aunt, the lady who runs this place, is at a conference in California. I adored Gemma, she is the only one I really trust here.
Slowly my sobbing came to a stop, Gemma wrapping her arms around me as she pulled my weak body into her lap. I'm twelve years old and five foot two, but I'm extremely skinny. I must have been light, at least I hope it was. What if I wasn't? What if I was an extra weight?
"Oh honey please calm down." She whispered, stroking my hair as she rocked me back and forth slowly. While my lips did seal together, my body was still shaking terribly. The dream of the night my mother died was replaying back and forth in my mind. I'm only grateful that it didn't progress, that it didn't show what happened after that.
"I-I'm sor-sorry." I managed to mutter, tears still flowing steadily down my cheeks as she continued to rock me back and forth. I'm not sure how long we stayed in that position, but soon I was calmed completely.
"I have an idea." Gemma smiled slightly as she looked down at me, her hands wiping away the stray tears still resting on my face. I rose an eyebrow, slightly confused as I rubbed my eyes.
"Visitors are coming soon, come on babe get cleaned up. I let you sleep in." She completely changed the subject, smiling cheerfully as she set my numb body back on the bed. I hate visiting time, it just reminds me that I have no one. That parents leave you, betray you, even break you.
And you can't fix what's broken, now can you?
In case you didn't know, the answer is no. It's impossible. Even for the wisest, kindest person in the world.
"Only because you didn't day please." I mumbled, smiling innocently up at her slightly while she rolled her eyes. She shooed me into the bathroom, which I was quick to scramble into, especially when she started waving her hands. I quickly, quietly shut the door and turned to face the room. I was in a shirt much too big, and shorts much too small. But there's nothing I could do about that.
I sighed and lifted my eyes to stare at my reflection. My bright green eyes were watery, my curly light brown hair a mess. The ends of my hair was dip dyed to an indigo color, and blonde highlights ran throughout the mess of it. I hated my appearance, I always have.
So ugly.
The voice in my head snickered, causing fresh tears to fill my eyes. Whenever it came around, everything went poorly. I hated it so much. But it's a part of me that I can't get rid of.
"Alright Ashton. It's show time." I muttered with fake enthusiasm before beginning the short process of fixing myself the best I could.
And trust me, it isn't that good.
