This routine continued for a few more days, until there was talk of a rainstorm coming. She didn't know if the lightning would hit, but she sincerely hoped so.
Around midnight, she got very lucky. There was a large CRACK! and she jolted awake. She slipped out while the lock was still in latches and dashed down the four flights of stairs. She ran into the basement storeroom, and climbed on top of a rickety old wooden table underneath the window. She always remembered to keep the window unlatched so that she could get back inside, but it was also only unlocked during the time the power was out. I she didn’t get back in , she would be stuck outside until the next storm, or until they found her, and made sure to tighten security on her tiny room. She clambered through the small crack in between the panes of glass and the concrete wall. The rain was pouring down, and hit her like tiny knives. It started to hail, tiny round cylindrical bullets hitting her skin.
She sneaked around the outskirts of the building, and slunk through the shrubbery around the fenced-in yard where she used to be able to go.
Abruptly, her mind went blank, and someone else came in. The other person was still in her body, but it wasn’t her. The New Girl started sprinting toward the small town about a mile away from the hospital. She continued running until she reached a small apartment building, where the girl’s parents lived. She lurked around the base of the stairs for a minute prior to clambering up the stairs. The girl grabbed the key from underneath the mat, and silently opened the door. She found her parents’ bedroom, and snuck inside, but not before she had grabbed a large knife from the kitchen.
A little while later, she crept back down the flights of stairs and dashed back to the sanatorium. When she arrived, the basement window was still unlocked, and she stealthily got back inside. She found her way up to the tiny room, and crawled underneath the covers, as if nothing had ever happened.
