Today Miss Hemilch made me her famous "Blueberry Pie" for my 10th birthday. She also brought Bolder a party hat. Bolder didn't thank her, but instead, he tried to wipe it off.

He doesn't have good manners.

Miss Hemlich said, "You've been alive for ten years!" I love her accent, I also love when she invites me inside her house for rolls on my way home from school. She would talk about Germany, and her husband. She said that when she was 7 she learned to bake, she said everyone in her small town wanted her rolls.

So I guess not much has changed. Everyone in our small town wants her rolls.

Miss Hemlich's house is my second home. I come there when Papa and Mama are fighting and when Lori and I get in a fight. She's always there.

"This is your home now," she told me, before handing me a spare key to her home-my home. The rest of the day I was happy, I smiled at everything. I laughed at every joke.

My birthday is like that day. I smiled. And laughed. But this time it was to please Mama, not because I was truly happy. She said it wasn't polite to not laugh at someone's joke, or smile when Aunties and Uncles gave presents. But when I saw Miss Hemlich I didn't have to fake it.
