Chapter One - A Memory

(Y/N)'s POV

Boom! The ground shook under my feet as I was walking along the road with my friends, Ayumi and Azami Yoshida, the twins.

"What was that?" Ayumi said, sounding alarmed and scared.

"I don't know," said Azami, "But it sounded like it came from the wall."

"Guys look!" I said, pointing to the gate, - or what we could see of the gate, – "I think it's a titan!"

Ayumi and Azami looked over at the gate also and saw what I saw. It was a massive being with no skin, just muscles. Soon after we saw it, it disappeared, and other titans started to pour in through a hole it had made. Azami stood paralyzed in fear at the sight she was seeing. Giant humanoid creatures, walking in through the wall, eating humans as they pleased.

"Come on, we gotta go," I said to them, "Let's get out of here. We need to get behind wall Maria, we'll be safe there." I grabbed Azami's hand, and the three of us ran as fast as we could to the wall, but before we got there, a giant 12-meter titan, stepped in front of us and grabbed Ayumi.

"Ayumi!" Azami yelled, running towards the titan, as it lifted Ayami up towards its mouth. Ayami was screaming in terror, and pounding her fists on the titan's hand to try and make it let her go. Then the titan lifted her up and dropped her into its mouth, still screaming. Azami screamed, and started running faster, and the titan picked her up and ate her too, and while all that was going on, I was frozen in terror, glued to that spot, not moving at all.

Then when the titan started reaching for me, I came to my senses, and darted out of the way. I ran down another street, avoiding titans, not bothering to stop and try to save anybody, because I knew it wasn't possible. I only slowed down a little when I ran past my house, just to see if my parents were alive, they weren't. Crushed by the house collapsing on top of them, what a pitiful way to go. They probably let the house crush them, just so they wouldn't get eaten by a titan. Well I couldn't say I wasn't surprised, they were always so weak, complaining about how they would never survive if the titans invaded, which is why they should be moved to the inner walls, like wall Rose, or wall Sina. I never complained, I just went along with it, and got out of the house as much as I could. They were always so annoying all the time. They weren't even my real parents. I was adopted by them. Sometimes I just wished they would die. I guess I got my wish...

Soon I got to the wall, and ran inside the gate. Finally inside wall Maria after all these years of waiting. Finally I could fulfill my dream that my parents never approved of, joining the Scouting Legion, and protecting mankind.

I looked around, and couldn't help noticing how much more stable the houses were, and how many more there were, than in the Shiganshina District.

I started to walk around a bit, to take it all in, but then I felt a rumble, a little like before when all the titans were coming in, but this was much bigger.

Maybe it's the giant titan coming to destroy wall Maria too! That wouldn't be good...

I started running away from the wall, because I didn't want to be in the way of the titans when they came crashing in.Suddenly the gate exploded, sending stones flying everywhere. I looked back, to see a giant titan. It wasn't as tall as the other one, but this one seemed to have some sort of armor on it, covering its skinless body, it breathed steam out of its mouth, and when the steam cleared, the titan was gone.I had no idea what was going on, but I needed to get out of there, so I ran as fast as I could, to the boats.I got on one just in time. I was the last one on, and then it was full. The angry mob of people outside the boat were yelling and trying to get on the boat. Some people even jumped, but they landed in the water. I sat down near the middle of the boat, and waited for my new life, to start.

"Hey, wake up sleepyhead!"

I groaned, "WhatisitSasha?"

"Silly! You have to get up because it's the first day of training and you need to have a good breakfast and you can't give me you bread if you're asleep." said Sasha, not taking one breath at all. She was very excited for the first day of training for the new recruits of the Scouting Legion.

"Justgimmiefivemoreminutes" I replied, still sleepy, and disoriented from the dream. I have the same dream every night, that day from six years ago, when wall Maria fell, and my real-life dreams became reachable.

"Oh, (Y/N)?" said Sasha, a little slower this time, "It's 6:29."

I lurched out of bed, "What!" I yelled "Why didn't you tell me sooner! Now I'm going to be late for breakfast!" I jumped out of bed, and quickly pulled on my clothes, and grabbed Sasha's hand, then I raced out the door.

{You see, I guess some people call me a time freak, or "Mom," because I hate being late, and hate when other people are late, or make me wait, it drives me crazy, and I had never been late once. So when Sasha told me that it was one minute before the designated time that I go to breakfast, I freaked. I ran around like a maniac, trying to get my clothes on, and get there on time. (We did end up making it though.)}

"We made it!" I said cheerfully as I walked into the mess hall."Yeah...we sure...did..." said Sasha, trying to catch her breath.We walked over to the table where all our friends were, and sat down. They had gotten our food for us already, so we didn't have to go get it.

"Man, Sasha, you are so unlucky to have gotten (Y/N) as a roommate. You look so tired. Did she make you run here at full speed?"

"I'm not that mean, Eren," I said with a little pouty face, "Only half speed." Everyone laughed at that.

"Seriously though Sasha, how are things going with (Y/N) as your roommate? Is it driving you nuts yet?"

"Very funny Jean." I said, "Honestly, I'm not that bad...Right Sasha?"

"Sorry (Y/N), but you kind of are!" joked Sasha, "Now give me your bread."

I shoved half of the bread that she was reaching for in her mouth to shut her up, then ate the other half.

"Hey guys! What's up?"

"Hey Mikasa, can you tell them that I'm not as bad as they say I am?" I pleaded her.

As she sat down next to Eren she said, "I would if it was true, but I don't like to lie." This caused more laughter, and I started pouting again.

"Armin?" I asked, basically begging now.

He sat down and shrugged, "Sorry."

I groaned and put my head down on the table, letting their conversations fade off. I picked my head up and looked over at the table where the special operations squad members sat, otherwise known as the Levi Squad. I had wanted to become one of them someday when I was younger, but now I know that it's impossible, they're just so good, and I'm only average.

I finished my breakfast quickly, then headed back to my room to get ready for my first day of training.
