Find The Courage

My mom tells the same story about me when i was a boy. "you used to recite every radio commercial by heart". Of course, I don't remember such a thing but i trust her when she says I was the neighbors wonder boy who knew all the radio jingles by hear.

Music was always a big part of me growing up. My dad used to have tons of records, starting with Prince and all the way to Tina turner. I remember staring at the record covers memorized by the images. The smell of vinyl records covers was sweet and inviting. Unfortunately, our record player never worked, at least it didn't when I joined the family. But i was intrigued by it. I used to put the record on, lower the needle and turn the record with my hand. I remember hearing the music playing very quietly coming out of the needle.

There's not a lot I remember from those days as a kid, but i do remember the day i found my dad's old guitar in the attic. I was ecstatic! I took the old thing and started playing and singing a song I remembered. Needless to say, I didn't know how to play guitar, but the sound I've created sounded right to me singing along with it. I think this was my first experience with creating music for myself.

This other time I remember, was when my mom took me with her to this big convention. I immediately noticed the big stage and the microphone. This was enough for me to convince the staff to let me go on stage and sing a song in front of every one in the audience.

Writing these lines, I surprise myself for the courage I had going up that stage and singing my heart off without fear or doubt (I didn't even know the words) . If only I had the same courage today as I used to have as a boy. Today I feel embarrassment every time I want someone to listen to my music, sometimes even to talk about it to others.

Today, I don't practice music as i would like to. I have a day job and a night dream, I dream that I could share my most intimate music and lyrics with the world and they the world embraces me and being moved by it.

This a music video of someone who dared. He is no big shot celebrity, but he had a dream and he went on and made this dream into a reality. until I can do the same, I will carry on and enjoy music from the listener side.
