Soulmate AU where the first words your soulmate says to you is written on your forearm.
Crush X Reader - Mistakes
You ran your fingers through your [Hair Color] tresses, a heavy feeling being lifted up your shoulders. It's been a stressful day for you, as so much work was piled up on the desk of your work cubicle. You didn't want to go home without finishing them all, knowing that there'd just be more work the next day.
It wasn't only that, either. Almost every one of your co-workers (even your boss) had found their soulmate. During a gathering or during their break, they spoke about their love lives or how they met their significant other. You were probably the only one who hasn't yet.
Your [Eye Color] eyes land on your forearm, a particularly long sentence neatly written in black. So you're my soulmate then.... makes it much more difficult.
When you had seen the words ink themselves onto your arm when you were in your teenager years, you were confused as to what this "it" was. You spent the following years trying to figure out what it might possibly mean, and you never had a final answer seeing as there weren't any clues that would help.
You let out a heavy sigh, pushing your reading glasses up your nose. You put your computer on sleep and stood up, wanting nothing more than a cup of coffee and [Favorite Food]. On the way to the exit, you passed by one of your co-workers with [Crush's Hair Color] hair.
[Crush's Name] [Crush's Surname]. The two of you had never spoken before, only brief nods in acknowledgement and nothing more. You found him attractive and he intrigued you, but you made no move to talk to him. He didn't seem like the social type, and according to a few of your co-workers, he didn't like holding long conversations. You thought that you weren't any different and chose to leave him be.
That was your first mistake.
You sent him a small smile and a nod in greeting before you brushed shoulders as you walked past him. You felt something tingle inside of you but you simply dismissed it, thinking it wasn't too important to be something to think about.
That was your second mistake.
No one went up to you as you prepared your coffee in your glass bottle that you got from a coffee shop. The black liquid poured into the container and you waited patiently, thinking about the things you've never bothered to dwell on before, things you regret doing, things that never would've happened if it wasn't for another event.
You hadn't noticed before, but your priority at the moment is your career. You didn't pay attention to yourself, your sleeping habits or your health. You focused on your job, you wondered why, and you decided that it was because you wanted to be successful.
Or because you were afraid.
Not only of the fact that you might not be good enough, but of the fact that you might not meet to the expectations of your soulmate, who you haven't met yet. You've heard of it happening before— relationships that had gone wrong because two individuals were just too different. You had always been afraid of not being good enough, as much as you assure yourself that you were, and it affected you greatly.
You brought the black coffee to your lips and took a sip, its familiar bitter taste meeting your buds. You suddenly felt your chest clench, as if a hand was squeezing your heart until it explodes, and you started to feel suffocated, even if no one was in the break room. Your grip on your drink tightened and you walked briskly into the direction of the elevator.
You hastily pressed on the upper button, your chest aching painfully. You thought it wasn't too major and decided that you needed some fresh air. The balconies are most likely occupied, and the roof was your usual place, much like a safe haven.
You entered the elevator and pressed the topmost button leading to the rooftop. You had been with your friends before they met their soulmate, and they've experienced the same thing you were experiencing right now. As the numbers on the elevator increased, you could only think.
What were you supposed to feel? Excited, scared? All your questions that have been running through your mind for years will be answered, and you prepared to be either frightened or happy.
The metal doors parted and you walked out of the elevator nervously. Your feet ached each step you took, your eyes darted around rooftop, finding it empty. You didn't know what to feel; thankful because you can have some time for yourself, or disappointed because your soulmate wasn't there waiting for you?
That feeling in your chest was only a feeling, it didn't hold anything special or important.
You sighed, running your fingers through your tangled hair, but then your eyes landed on a figure stepping a foot on the edge. You froze, your eyes widening, and you intinctively opened your mouth.
"What are you doing?!" You screamed in horror, your drink falling to the ground. The familiar [Crush's Hair Color] haired man stopped his movements, lifting his wrist up to his face, before turning around to meet your gaze.
"So you're my soulmate then...," He mused, a small smile slipping onto his face. "Makes it much more difficult." Your shoulders relaxed a bit, thinking that he won't jump anymore.
That was your third mistake.
You took small steps toward him, bringing your own wrist up to read the words inked in your skin. You were confused; the words were supposed to disappear once you and your partner meet.
"Makes what more difficult?" You asked softly, looking up and making eye contact with him. "I have so many questions.....[Crush's Name]."
"Sorry," He apologized, making you furrow your brows in confusion. "I may not be able to answer any of them."
"Why?" You questioned further, before blinking in realization and stopping in your tracks. "Oh, that's fine, I'll give you some time. We've only met and I'm sure some of these questions are persona—"
"It's not that," [Crush's Name] interrupted, waving a hand. "I trust you already. It's just that— I probably won't be there to answer your questions."
"What does that mean?" You were confused. This was the first time you spoke to each other, is he already leaving you?
He smiled at you, and even though you weren't that close, you saw a hint of fondness in it. He cared for you, you could see. He had already fallen for you.
Your eyes widened when you noticed [Crush's Name] moving backwards slightly. "What are you—!!" You broke into a run when you processed what was happening. Instinctively, you held out your arm to grab onto him.
Your fingers briefly brushed against his, and before he completely fell off the edge, he gave you a soft, genuine smile. As if he's apologizing for everything. And you were clueless.
You didn't know that his first few words to you would be his last.
