Chapter 1

Afraid of the Dark

Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.

--Sarah Williams, "The Old Astronomer"

As I stood on the balcony it was pitch black, then I opened my eyes, it was cloudy out, dark gray, smoke was rising from below, some crawled across the sky, some disappeared, like life... It was like life, you we're born, you do what you need to, then die. And you could do nothing about it... I held my hand out across the railing and let go of the white roses. As I watched them fall, blue eyes flashed at the back of my vision, dark but light, locked but reachable, cracked but whole...

"Who are you?" I asked frantically, trying to feel around the dark room. my hand hit something cold and damp, I backed up into the corner, pressing my shoulders against the stone.

A creaky old voice answered my question, "It's ok Miss Salvatore, your fine." She knows my name... I thought But how? I only just got here!

"Who are you!" I demanded, "I won't run! I can't I'm in a dress! If that's what you thinking of me doing! At least give me some light!" I say harshly.

"I'm Mrs. Black." She light a candle swiftly and expertly. Suddenly there was a thud We both looked up then another thud. It coming from a window higher up, it was caked in dust and dirt, but you could still see a shadow looming behind it. Thud thud there it was again, faster, then the window shuttered. Thud. Finally the window shattered, it was the loudest sound I'd heard in quite a while, so I crouched down and covered my ears. I saw something dark flash and a slim figure slip though the frame.

"Hello," he said icily, to be specific he was a boy with black hair and dark blue eyes, the color of Hell's sky. "I'm William Herondale." He took a step toward Mrs. Black.

She scowled, "Shadowhunter.." It happened all so fast first they where snarling incomprehensible comments at each other, then they tackled each other. They rolled around for a while then, he--William--killed Mrs. Black.

He stood and looked around, spotting me he walked to me. I must have looked pathetic, trembling in the corner, the white roses in my hair crumpled, my light pink dress dirty, and my golden blonde curls a mess hanging around my shoulders. "Hello, I'm William Herondale, call me Will though, everyone does. Who might you be?"

After I stopped trembling I looked up at him. He's beautiful I thought, high, sharp cheekbones, stunning eyes, dark hair, pale face, the darkest eyelashes I've ever seen... I shook myself, "I-I'm Emilia Salvatore," I replied, I couldn't even keep my voice steady, I was so shaken up. After the death of my aunt...my brother disappearing... He helped me up and hugged me, sensing my sadness, and I melted into his arms, like water. I let it all out, the sadness, the frustration, helplessness. I hated crying, but I felt I could trust him, like...he understood...
