The neighbours dog had been barking for over an hour and Leah was close to knocking her neighbours door to demand that they feed, entertain or do whatever it is that they needed to do to shut him up. But she didn't want to be that neighbour so she rolled over to the other side of the bed and placed the pillow over her ears in an attempt to block out the sounds of his bark.
The refreshing coolness of the pillow immediately silenced her thoughts. Thoughts that had been dominating her mind since she had last seen Ryan, demanding an explanation as to why he hadn't been in contact, needing to know what she had done, suggesting she just turn up at his bar unannounced. She rolled onto her back and took her phone out from under her pillow to see a text from Pen.
Pen: You alright Le?xx
Leah: Yep
Pen: Have you heard of him yet?xx
Leah: Nope
Leah: Just don't understand what I did wrong things were going so well
Pen: YOU didn't do anything he's just a knob. His Loss!!xx
Leah sighed and put her phone back down. She appreciated Pens efforts to cheer her up but "his loss" was such an over-used meaningless phrase. What if he just wasn't that into her, if that were the case then how could he possibly be loosing anything? Was it even possible to loose what you didn't want. He was an intelligent, funny, ambitious, sexy guy, what if it was her loss?
She heard a car slowly approach and headed for the window to see her neighbour pulling into their driveway. She pushed the window open and shouted,
"not being funny but can you do something about THAT," she pointed at their dog then slammed the window shut and jumped back into bed feeling slightly better for venting her frustration about her love life towards the unsuspecting and likely terrified neighbour.
Fed up with being in bed with only self-pity for company Leah decided she would get up and face the day and all its first world problems. She got out her phone to text Pen
Leah: Stick the kettle on Im coming round for a cup of tea!x
Pen: Tea?? Ive got half a bottle of moscato rosé here were having that x
Leah: you know me so well...luv u xx
Pen: Luv u too call when ur here as im upstairs x
As the water from the shower washed over her Leah closed her eyes and imagined all thoughts of regret and upset were washing away. This would not be a repeat of the Jacob situation where she spent more than an adequate amount of time obsessing. No. This did not work out and today she would be moving on from the guy she knew for little more than a month. She threw on some leggings and a vest top then grabbed her parker coat and headed for the door. As she walked out towards her car her heart began to race as she noticed a familiar face walking towards her. Eventually her mind caught up recognising who it was.
Ryan.
"Hello Leah," he said coyly stopping in his tracks.
"Hello?" she responded in a tone that suggested he better explain himself fast or leave.
"Ahhh I'm sorry I haven't been in touch just," he paused "been busy with a few things."
Too busy to pick up the phone she thought before the volcano inside her erupted,
"so busy you couldn't text back or answer your phone!! Look if you're not that interested that's fine we will just call it a day but what you absolutely cannot fvcking do is turn up outside MY house telling me that you couldn't spare 5 seconds to let me know you had a few things going on," she exclaimed before marching towards her car and opening the door.
He ran over to her and slammed her car door shut to stop her from getting in. She looked into his eyes and tried to dismiss the flutters in her stomach. He didn't tower over her the way Jacob did but his presence was powerful and she felt herself weakening the closer he got.
She huffed, "I know we're not together but..."
"I want us to be,' he stated looking her in the eyes without an air of uncertainty. "Ok I haven't been busy," he continued "I just really REALLY like you and you know what it scared me. I haven't felt that way since my ex a few years ago and when we broke up it really messed me up."
She stood silent not knowing how to respond. It had been a while since someone had been so decisive in expressing to her what they want. In wanting her. She stood not knowing whether to give in so easily but also not wanting to put up a fight. A smile crept across her face, he was only human after all and she knew too well how complex emotions can be.
He mirrored her smile and his shoulders relaxed in relief.
"I don't know what the hell you're wearing but you need to get changed," he demanded. "I'm taking you out."
She laughed and leaned in to kiss him before walking back to her house. As she did she contemplated her new found relationship status. Did it have any meaning or was it just a title? All she knew is that this time would be different as she was different. This time there would be no rush, no pressure just two individuals getting to know each other more and more. It would not be a repeat of the Leah/Jacob saga with its series of unfortunate events. Walking out the door towards Ryans car she smiled when she recognised how far she had come and how different things were just a few years before....
