I stepped in the phone booth, doing my best not to cry and searching my pockets for some change. When I finally found some I dialed the number to my best friend, Lisa.
“Hello, who is this?”, Lisa asked when she finally answered. When I heard her voice and couldn’t help the tears that started to run down my cheeks.
“Hello? Anyone there?”, Lisa asked again and I remembered that I still had not said a word yet.
“Lisa, it’s me. Danni”, was all I could get out between the tears that was pouring down my face.
“Danni, are you okay? What happened? Did he hurt you again?”, she demanded to know.
“I… I can’t go home again. Dad is going to kill me if I do… I ran away when he thought I had passed out from the beating and went to get a beer.”
“Danni, it’s ok. You can stay here. Mum and dad are listening to us right now. I’m sorry but I had to tell them. We were going to get you tomorrow when we had a bedroom set up for you here. Just tell me where you are and we will come and get you, ok?”
After telling Lisa where I was, we hung up and I sat down on the curve next to the phone booth, waiting for her to come. As I sat there waiting, I pulled my hoodie down over my face. Not because it was cold, it was just past dinner 4 but I didn’t want people to stare at my face. I knew my cheek was rose red from the slap my dad had given me at first, I had a small bruise under my eye after an old black-eye and I knew my forehead was bleeding from the glass my dad threw at me. I looked down at the ground and put my arms around my legs and waited.
“Danielle!”, I heard a voice call. It wasn’t Lisa’s voice though, like I had expected to hear. This voice was dark and friendly and couldn’t belong to anyone other than Lisa’s dad, James. The dad I had always wished I had while growing up.
I looked up just as he came reached out and pulled me up standing on my feet. He pulled my hood down and lifted my chin, growling when he saw what my dad had done to me. I wondered how he would react if he found out what else my dad had done, the bruise and cuts to my face was nothing compared to the ones I had on my body and he was already growling.
I looked him in the eyes and I couldn’t help but to start crying again. I clang onto his shirt as he pulled me in to a hug.
“Nothing will hurt you anymore, ok? You are going to stay at our house from now on. We won’t let your dad get anywhere near you, you hear me?”, he said while gently stroking my head and all I could do was to nod. I knew he wasn’t just saying that to make me feel better. James always meant what he said and never went back on his word. I knew that I could trust him and the rest of his family as much as I trusted Lisa.
When I had stopped crying, we got in the car and drove the way to their house. As we pulled up the driveway, I saw tons of cars. Crap! I had forgotten that they were throwing a party for their pack and since James is the alpha, of course the party would be at their house.
“Don’t worry about the party. I promise they won’t bother you, I’ll make sure they all will leave you alone. Well… except Lisa and Lilly of course, I couldn’t make them leave you alone for anything in the world”, he said smiling comforting after notice me starring at the cars.
I returned the smile the best I could and got out of the car only to be pinned up against it by a stranger growling the word “mine”.
