Kazuto flipped through the pages of the manga he was checking out at the convenience store. He was supposed to be buying groceries, but that could wait, he was just getting to the good part and this was the latest volume of his favorite manga. Ah, so that was the villain's true identity, interesting. In any case, he should probably get to those groceries. He picked up some ingredients, a couple packs of instant food, and some snacks for his gaming later that day. Most of that was at his discretion, but he paid for it with his own money, so it was fine.
He walked up to the cash register and set down his stuff.
"Welcome," said the cashier. "Nice day out today, huh?"
"Yeah," said Kazuto.
"Was everything okay today?" asked the cashier as he packed Kazuto's stuff in a bag.
"Yeah, thanks. Good-bye."
With that, Kazuto turned and walked out of the store. Then he blinked and everything changed. Suddenly, it was daytime instead of sunset, and instead of a modern city, Kazuto was surrounded by buildings that wouldn't have looked out of place in medieval Europe, maybe early Renaissance Europe.
Kazuto was also nagged by the odd sensation of being watched, but no matter how much he turned, he couldn't find the watcher. The town was bustling, with people walking all around and horses, carriages, and wagons filling the street.
Was it possible that Kazuto had blacked out and walked to a nearby Renaissance fair? No, that was ridiculous. The only other conclusion was that he had been summoned to a parallel world, which was an even more ridiculous, though awesome, thought. He had to remain calm. If he'd just ended up in a different part of the city, he should be able to walk a little and find something familiar, right? So, he decided to walk around and try to get his bearings.
Two hours later, he'd had no luck. Nothing looked familiar. Not in the right way anyway, it all looked like something out of an RPG. Kazuto was pretty sure he'd seen some giants and elves among the people too. He pulled out his phone and checked the signal. No service. So, out of options, Kazuto decided to just ask someone where he was. He walked up to a fruit stand and spoke to the vendor.
"Excuse me, where am I?" Kazuto asked.
The vendor just shot a scathing glare at Kazuto and walked away, supposedly to tend his extra stock. A nearby man who appeared to be homeless took a swig of some kind of liquid, probably alcoholic, and laughed.
"Sorry about that, boy," he said. "But people are a little untrusting with the things that have been going on recently. I'm sure you can understand."
No, actually, Kazuto had no idea what was going on.
"You look confused. It seems like you're not from around here, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. You're in the town of Cordia, in the kingdom of Celestia. Recently, there's been a rash of demon attacks, that's what's got everybody so jumpy."
"I understand," said Kazuto. "I'd be jumpy too. Would you know how I can get back to Japan from here?"
"Japan? Never heard of it. You must be really lost!"
The man broke into another fit of laughter, which quickly turned into a coughing fit. Kazuto scowled at the man, then turned and walked away. Then, he surveyed his surrounding in more detail than before. Based on the number of people and shops around, Kazuto was guessing he was in a major town square. There was a fountain in the center of the square, but the water flowing was slow and weak.
