I started to notice weird things happening when I was 5.
It was my friend's 6th birthday and I was extremely jealous. Kaitlyn Lowell - my best friend - always got what she wanted. This year it was a party at the biggest and best sweet shop in town. And, of course, the whole year had been invited so the place was packed full of people.
Now, this was the time when I had my first crush, a boy named Jackson. Unfortunately, his family moved to America the next year but that isn't the point here. He was conveniently invited to the party and was, for some reason, sat in the corner alone. So, whilst Kaitlyn was being bombarded by people trying to get her to open their presents first, I snuck off through the crowd and approached him.
"Hello?" I said tentatively. "Uh, hi?" he responded. And that was the start of what I thought would be a beautiful relationship where we kissed and ran along the beach into each other's arms and were completely in love. Typically, something had to ruin this. After sitting down and chatting for a few minutes, Kaitlyn seemed to notice I was missing. She and I looked up at the same time and caught each other's eye. She was smiling at me until she glanced down and saw who I was sat next to. Then she caught sight of his hand gradually inching its way towards me. Then her smile faltered and her eyes changed to a hurt expression. My 5-year-old self simply thought she fancied him too.
To be honest, the thought of getting something that Kaitlyn didn't have delighted me, and so I broke my gaze away and paid full attention to Jackson.
The next few events all happened so fast that I can't clearly remember what happened. All I know is that one of the posh, ceramic plates that provided sweet treats for us kids smashed just above my head, sweets scattering everywhere. Everyone says that it was Jackson, after all, he was known to get angry quite quickly and he was the only one anywhere near the plates. I knew better though.
The stupid adults didn't believe me, said I just didn't see it and that I was in shock. That's not true.
That plate moved by itself.
Author's note:
So, what did you guys think? Who is telling the truth here? What (or who) moved the plate?
