I was a typical boy.
Like most typical boys, I had no idea what I was doing, especially when it came to girls. So when I started pushing Samantha away because the other guys in our class started making a big deal about us? I was just being typical.
I always knew I liked her. We grew up together. You can't hang out with someone on a daily basis, sharing ice cream and climbing trees without liking the person. I just didn't realize then how much I liked her like her.
But then, we both entered Luna East. And when the guys from the football club realized we were friends, they started asking me favors.
"Hey, Hidalgo, who's that chick you hang out with? Introduce us next time, why don't you?"
"Hey, Hidalgo! What's Sam's favorite color? What's her favorite chocolate brand?"
"Hey, Hidalgo! She's not your girlfriend, right? Set us up on a date, will you?"
A guy can get sick of all those "Hey, Hidalgos."
"You like Coronel? Really? How many times did you bump your head against the enemy goal post, Roces?" I laughed, my tongue unused to calling Samantha by her surname. "Coronel's just a bratty little kid who still sleeps with the nightlight on."
Somehow, I knew by the way they all shut up and looked shocked that Samantha was probably overhearing it all. But I still went ahead.
"You really need to get your eyes checked, man. I can't imagine her going out with anyone. It will be too weird." It was the truth. I really can't imagine her going out with anyone not me. Of course, I didn't say it out aloud.
I heard a choked sob behind me. But she was gone by the time I turned.
