People are gathered at the Grierson's house in respect to Emily's death. Men were offering roses while women were looking all across the room.
NARRATOR 1: LOOK, OVER THERE, THE TWO WHO SEEM TO BE JUST AS FAIR, AS THE FALLEN MAIDEN MISS EMILY. (sung althroughout)
NARRATOR 2: I DO, I SEE, AND FROM WHAT I KNOW, THE LATTERS ARE THE ONLY ONES LEFT OF ALL OF THEM. (sung althroughout)
N1: LEFT OF THEM? (spoken but still with a tone like in Broadway)
N2: YES, LEFT OF THEM. (spoken but still with a tone like in Broadway)
N1 : (sung) WHAT EVER DO YOU MEAN?
N2: (sung) THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES LEFT, CLOSE TO MISS EMILY.
N1: (spoken) DO YOU MEAN...HER ONLY REMAINING...?
N2: (spoken sadly)INDEED. (sung) THE ONLY ONES LEFT OF HER FAMILY. (spoken) DISTANT, EVEN.
N1 & N2: (sung) *looks at Emily's portrait and shakes their heads in dismay at the same time* POOR EMILY.
Near the doorway of the room, the sheriff is talking discreetly to Emily's two cousins. The two are frustrated at the man as he keeps shaking his head.
N2: (sung) DO YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON?
N1: *SHAKES HEAD* (sung) I DON'T. BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW.
N1 & N2: (whispers)LET'S MOVE CLOSER.
N1 and N2 move closer to the three and pretend to just be whispering to each other while looking at the portrait of Emily.
SHERIFF: (sung) WHY DON'T THE TWO OF YOU JUST HEAR ME OUT? WE'RE HERE TO PAY OUR RESPECTS SO JUST STOP YOU'RE PRYING NOW. (spoken) FROM ME, FROM US, AND ALL OF JEFFERSON, GET SOME LEARNING NOW. EVEN AFTER LIFE, WE SHOULDJUST STOP BOTHERING MISS EMILY.
COUSIN 1: (spoken) BUT WE'RE NOT HERE TO BOTHER ANYONE, SHERIFF. (sung) YOU SEE, THE TWO OF US SUSPECT, *looks around the house* NORMALITY WAS NEVER ON THIS SIDE OF THE FAMILY.
*N1 and N2 look at each other and listen more attentively*
S: (sung) YOU SAY THAT YOU SUSPECT, NOT SURE OF ANY CLAIMS. I'M SORRY BUT I CANNOT ENTERTAIN SUSPICIONS AND SUSPICIONS ALONE. (spoken) I AM THE SHERIFF AND I MUST LIVE UP TO MY TITLE. COME TO ME WHEN YOU FINALLY HAVE SOME CERTAINTY. *tries to walk away but one of them stops him*
COUSIN 2: (sung) GOOD SIR, YOU SEEM LIKE A FINE MAN AND WE UNDERSTAND. BUT WHAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IS THAT WE, (spoken) WE DIDN'T KNOW OUR COUSIN VERY WELL...
