I walked through the store looking for the perfect prom dress. Me and my best friend, Harley, were looking for big dresses that would stand out in the crowd. Harley had found a poofy blue dress. I was still looking. I turned a corner and saw the perfect dress. I grabbed it and almost ran to the fitting room. I put the dress on and stared at myself in the mirror. It had poofy black sleeves with giant drapes of cloth that hung off my arms. It had a v-neck with a black bodice. The full skirt was black on the sides with a wide white stripe down the middle. It made me look even taller, if that was possible, and it made me look thinner, again, if that was possible. My silky, brown hair flowed down my back. My unbelievably blue eyes popped. My tan skin looked a shade paler. I looked at the price tag. $75.99, my parents had given her $100. I changed back into my own clothes.
Once I had found Harley, we bought the dresses and walked out of the store. We found a shoe place and walked inside. Harley found blue heels that were the same dark blue shade as her dress. I did find some black heels that matched the dress but I hate heels. They make my feet hurt so I chose some black flats with little white bows on the toes. We combined the extra money and had just enough for the shoes. We walked out with the bags and went out into the parking lot.
We climbed into my blue Ford truck. I was manly unless I was begged by all of my friends to go to prom and by like half the guys in our school. I'm not popular but exceptionally beautiful, at least that's what people tell me. Guys were constantly staring. My wierdness and my manliness didn't deter them. It got really old really fast.
"So, did you choose to accept any of the promposals?" Harley asked.
"No, none of them really sparked. Maybe I'll just go by myself." I answered.
"If you don't want them, can you refer them over to me, please?" I chuckled as Harley batted her eyelashes innocently.
"Fine, but there will be a lot of guys headed your way." Harley smiled.
We rode the rest of the way in almost silence. The only sounds were the engine and clicking of the keys on Harley's phone. I pulled into the driveway of Harley's house.
"See ya tomorrow." I said with a wave as Harley got out of the truck. I pulled out of the driveway and then into one two houses over. I grabbed my bags from the backseat and walked into the house. Neither of my parents were home, shocker. Note sarcasm. My parents were rich and usually at work or on an expensive, long vacation.
"Jade, is that you?" I heard my brother come down the stairs. He was my step brother and since we're in the same grade, he embarrassed me on a regular basis.
"No, it's a robber who just so happens to have keys to the front door." I said sarcastically. He gave me a pointed look.
"What's in the bags?" he asked.
"Clothes." I said vaguely.
"Who should I ask to prom?" he asked with a serious look.
"Hmmm, how about Louise."
"I'll give it a go." he smiled and opened the fridge. He frowned and closed it. "Can we order pizza?" he asked.
I rolled my eyes. I was in charge of the money when our parents weren't home because Nick was known to spend it irresponsibly. I pulled my laptop out of my backpack and turned it on. Then I went to the Papa John's website and placed my order. Nick, who was watching me over my shoulder, started doing a happy dance around the kitchen.
"That is not a correct happy dance. You don't have any background music." I turned on Happy by Heitor Pereira. We danced around the kitchen, terribly I might add, until the song was over. When it was over, I took my mall bags up to my gargantuan bedroom.
It was huge. There was a giant king size bed with the headboard against one wall with expensive sheets on it. An expensive blue fuzzy rug was underneath it. The floors were marble, which was weird for a bedroom. Pictures covered most of the walls. Some were taken and some I had drawn. A door led into a master bathroom with a walk in shower and a black bathtub. A giant mirror covered the top half of one wall while a counter and cupboards covered the bottom half. Another door led to my walk in closet. I put my shoes on the shoe rack that covered an entire wall but only had one row filled up. I hung the dress in its protective cover on the girly side of my closet. If you looked at my closet you wouldn't think I was manly but if you look at the items in it, you could. One wall had girly clothes, one wall had manly clothes, and one wall had shoes. Which wall do you think has the most items. My mom was very controlling and wanted her little girl to act like a woman but my step dad allowed me some manly clothes and allowed me to have a truck even though I didn't need it.
I grabbed some sweatpants and a gators T-shirt along with clean bra and underwear and walked into the bathroom. I took a long warm shower. Just as I got out, the doorbell rang and I heard Nick answer it. I put my clean clothes on and pulled my wet hair up into a bun. I walked down the magnificent staircase. I saw my brother talking to someone at the door. I walked over and was surprised to see my long time crush, Josh, standing at the door with a pizza in his arms. They both turned to look at me as I approached. Josh and Nick were good friends.
"Josh, I didn't know you had a job." I said with a confused look.
"Oh, I just started yesterday." he answered.
I walked into the kitchen and grabbed some money from our kitty cat cookie jar. I handed him the money and took the pizza from him.
"Keep the change. It's the least we could do for a friend." I said when he started to protest.
"Thanks." he said.
"Do you want to join us for dinner?" Nick asked. I swung my head to look at him.
Josh glanced at me, "Sure, this was my last delivery." he said with a smile. He walked inside and headed for the kitchen.
"Nicholas, what are you doing?" I asked in a hushed voice.
"Scoring you a date to prom. I know you've been waiting for him to ask you." he said with a smirk.
I sighed and went into the kitchen. I found Josh pourng himself some Coke. I got down a glass and poured some for myself. Nick got the apple cider out. I grabbed three slices of pizza and sat down at the island.
When we were done, Josh went to get something from his car while Nick went up to his room. I walked into the living room and sat down on the couch. I nearly peed herself when Josh snuck up behind me and scared the crap out of me. I glared at him while he rolled on the floor. He was laughing so hard, no sound was coming out. When he finally composed himself, he stood in front of me with a smile on his lips. He got down on one knee and held out a rose. I gasped.
"Would you do me the honor of being my date to the prom?" he asked.
"Yes." that was the only word my lips could form. I took the rose and gave it a sniff before sneezing.
"Bless you." Josh smiled. He hugged me and gave me a peck on the cheek. Then he walked out the front door. I stood there like an idiot staring at the rose he had given me.
"So I take it you have a prom date?" Nick's voice made me jump. I ignored him and went up to my room. I took out my iPhone and texted Harley about Josh. She demanded for details tomorrow at school. I chuckled and flopped onto my bed. I turned on my TV only to discover that there was nothing on. I sighed and turned it off. I pulled my laptop on my lap and started playing Sims. At ten I turned my laptop off and clapped my hands. The lights turned off and I rolled onto my stomach. I fell into a deep sleep.
