She walked to the mailbox
On that bright summers day
Found a letter from her love
In a war, far away
Joanne walked out on a sunny July morning and opened the mailbox, grinning stupidly when she saw a small white envelop with her address printed on the front in clean print.
It was a letter from Soundwave.
Inside of the envelope was a data chip that could be put in her special computer and print out the letter in the mech's neat, clean handwriting.
She stuck the chip in the port of the computer and tapped her foot impatiently waiting for the letter to print.
When it finally beeped, she snatched and it started reading, her face almost splitting in two from the grin that was steadily growing.
He spoke of the planet
And good friends that he'd made
Said, "I'd been talking with Prime
And the plans that we had that's why, I'm here today"
And then in the end he said, "You are what I'm fighting for"
It was the first of his letters from war
Joanne knew that Optimus had planned on taking Soundwave with him should the battle go off-planet. Said mech had actually suggested the idea in the first place, though he knew the sacrifices he would have to make.
Joanne missed him horribly, and was worried for a brief moment that the feeling wasn't reciprocated when he described the beautiful planet and the friends he found in the Autobots he was fighting alongside.
Her worries were dissipated, however, when she read the last line.
She started writing
You're good and you're brave
What a sire that you'll be someday
Make it home, make it safe
She wrote every night as she prayed
Joanne imagined Soundwave by her side and couldn't help but have girlish fantasies about the children she wanted to have with him, despite obvious biological differences. Her journal was filled to the brim with her hopes and dreams of having a family, and every few pages or so, there was a prayer written to Primus that he would be home with her again.
Late in December
A day, she'll not forget
Oh, her tears stained the paper
With every word that she read
It said, "I was up on a hill, I was out there alone
When the shots all rang out and bombs were exploding
That's when I saw him, he came back for me
And though he was captured a mech set me free
And that mech was your love, he asked me to write to you
I told him, I would, Oh, I swore"
It was the last of the letters from war
When she read the letter from Wheeljack, Joanne's heart squeezed painfully in her heaving chest, her sobs heard by Miko, who had come over. The Japanese girl held the crying blonde close, murmuring empty words of comfort in her ear, and silently cursing the mech for getting himself caught.
And she prayed, he was living, kept on believing
And wrote every night just to say
You are good and you're brave
What a sire that you'll be someday
Make it home, make it safe
Still she kept writing each day
Everyone told her that it was useless, that Soundwave would never come home because he either defected, or offlined. Joanne ignored them all and still prayed to Primus and kept filling her new journal with hope that he would be back in her arms.
Because without hope, Joanne knew she would lose everything.
Then two years later
Autumn leaves, all around
A car pulled in the driveway
And she fell to the ground
And out stepped a warrior
Where her love used to stand
Joanne was washing dishes when Miko came running into the kitchen, panting and eyes wide. "What's wrong, Miko? Is-"
"Everything's great! Come on!" She grabbed Joanne's still-wet hand and pulled her to the open door. Joanne was about to scold the Japanese girl when she saw what had her so excited.
A horribly familiar Mercedes SLR rolled onto the dirt driveway, and Joanne's heart swelled when she saw an equally-familiar holoform step out. Her eyes let loose a flow of tears over her cheeks.
Joanne's knees buckled, her hands over her mouth. 'This can't be...!'
He said, "Jo, I'm followin' orders
From all of your letters and I've come home again"
He ran into hold her, dropped all his bags on the floor
Holdin' all of her letters from war
Soundwave ran in and caught Joanne before she hit the ground, holding her close and putting his nose in her hair, desperate to fill all his senses with her. "I'm following orders, Jo. I'm home." He murmured, pulling her back and planting kisses all over her forehead and cheeks, before pressing his forehead to hers and looking in her shining violet orbs, seeing nothing but love and joy in it's purest form in them.
Soundwave's eyes were flowing with tears, much like his sparkmate's. The couple clung to each other desperately, terrified something worse than war would pull them apart again.
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home
Burying her face in Soundwave's chest, Joanne sobbed with joy as she sent up a prayer.
Thank you, Primus!
