Chapter 3
My mom sat before me, smiling her comforting smile, and laughing her cheerful laugh. She was wearing her absolute favorite blue v-neck, and a pair of jeans. She was perched on the kitchen stool, jotting something down in her notebook. This day seemed familiar.
"Hey honey! How are you?" She cheered, the wrinkles by her eyes becoming more prominent as she did so. I could feel my body moving towards the fridge uncontrollably.
"Fine." I growled. Did I really just say that?
"Well I have some exciting news. In honor of Dylan, and the Greensborough High Football Team, qualifying for Play-Offs, the school is having a banquet tonight. I was hoping you could come! The ceremony is at 6:30, so I was thinking we could-"
"I am going to the movies tonight with Lotta and Tess." I interrupted, referring to my two closest friends I had during junior year.
"Elizabeth, I get that you want to hang out with your friends, but this night is really special. It would mean a lot to your brother if you could come." She protested, not a hint a judgement in her voice.
"I go by Blair now, not Elizabeth. And I said I'm going to the movies." I replied through gritted teeth.
"Honey, the movies can wait. This night should be about Dylan and his accomplishments in football, not you and your friends. Dylan would really appreciate you being there."
"Well Lotta and Tess would also appreciate me being at the movies. I promised them I would go, and that is what I will do. I'm sorry mom, I don't know what else to tell you."
"You can tell me that you are going to come to the banquet." She pleaded.
"I said NO, mom!" I shouted, my voice level reaching a maximum. My mother's face drooped. Why was I saying such cruel things? I tried to prevent the harsh words from escaping my lips, but it was to no avail.
"I didn't want to have to do this but you are leaving me no choice." Her voice wavered when she spoke. "You are going to Dylan's banquet tonight whether you like it or not. You are going to wear a dress, and heels, and make up. We will be polite, and we will act like a family. Screw this up, and your punishment will be everlasting I can assure you that. I gave you an opportunity to choose the right path, but you did not, therefore I am taking away your privileges. It is in your best interest that you go get ready now." By the end of her speech her voice was no longer hesitant, but held a sense of domaninace.
I opened my mouth to speak, but quickly to decided against it. Instead I turned around and headed for the stairs, but before I had the chance to escape the wrath of my mother, I was drawn in by her voice.
"Oh, and Elizabeth?" She asked, very well aware that she had my attention.
"Curl your hair."

I was awaken by someone violently shaking me, as if in attempt to bring me back to reality. It was Gunner, his warm hands gripping each of my arms. What had just happened?
I looked around. The kitchen I was just in had been replaced with the familiar scene of Dylan's car. My head lay still in Gunner's lap. Dylan sat upfront, silently taking us to our destination. I must've fallen asleep on the drive to L.A. Today was the day I was seeing my new apartment. So that means everything that had just occurred was only a dream? But it was like I was there. I could still taste the words on my lips.
"Your mind is tricking you." Gunner whispered in my ear. I must look pretty disheveled for him to feel the need to say that.
"Everything all right back there?" Dylan called.
