Damon's POV:
~Two Weeks Later~
Elena was in the kitchen like she always was these days and I was sitting at the island supposedly reading The Call of the Wild, but I was really watching Elena. I peeked over the top of the book to see her bent over in the refrigerator searching for something. My eyes couldn't help but betray me and take in her slimness and those fine curves of hers. And that ass.
I quickly retreated back into the pages of my book and pretended to read as she busied herself around the kitchen. The Italian in me was burning with the desire to do some cooking of my own, but if I even tried to take one step into the kitchen Elena would be fussing at me to get my ass out. Last I checked, this was my house and my kitchen.
I peered over the yellowed aged pages again to find Elena standing at the stove with her back to me. She was humming along to the music that was coming from the radio she had turned on earlier. I smiled when the humming evolved into singing and her beautiful voice quietly sang along in harmony with the male artist. I hid back behind my book. "You should have been a singer."
Elena grew quiet and turned to me with a raised eyebrow. "You really think so? I always thought I was terrible at singing. Whenever Jeremy hears me singing in the shower he yells at me to shut up," She grinned.
"You sing in the shower?"
Elena's cheeks flamed as red as her vampire blood would allow when she realized what she had said. "Um..."
"Hey, don't sweat it. I'm known to belt out a few verses of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift," I gave her the smirk I knew she secretly loved before we both started laughing. "I heard Stefan singing Justin Bieber a couple of times too. I swear I was scarred for life."
"Yeah..." We laughed again before both of us grew silent at the mention of Stefan. Then a small smile formed across Elena's face. "So what were you wanting to do back when you were first human?"
I remembered clearly what I wanted to be all of those years ago and I remembered how my father reacted when I told him. "Actually...I really wanted to be a doctor. But my father forced me in the direction of the army - seeing as we were in the middle of the Civil War and all - and I became a confederate soldier instead."
My eyes fell back to the pages of my book, but instead of seeing the squiggles of the black letters...I was back in the past..back in the war. It got pretty brutal and I would have died once if it weren't for a fellow soldier. I remember Stefan wanted to follow me and enlist with me, but our father refused. Seeing as Stefan wasn't eighteen yet, he had no choice but to obey and watch me go off into battle on my own. I remember writing to him and describing how awful it was having to watch friends die. Some went instantly. Others weren't so lucky. I remember being taken by enemy soldiers and imprisoned in a death camp. They had starved us, barely gave us enough food to keep our skeletal bodies alive. I was one of the few lucky ones who managed to escape and find their way back home. I was glad Stefan didn't have to face the horrors I had and he had sensed the change in me when I returned home to Mystic Falls.
"Dr. Damon Salvatore," Elena's voice cut through the horrid memories as she let the title slip off her tongue. "I like it. It suits you and it has quite a nice ring to it too." Her beautiful chocolate brown eyes lit up excitedly. "Hey, maybe you still can! You should register for some classes at the community college with Caroline, Bonnie, and me!"
"Did you forget about the part where Katherine said that all of the supernatural enemies I've made over the years were coming to kill me?"
Elena sighed,"Damon, I already told you that you're going to be just fine. Liz even agreed to get the Council on the watch for anyone new in town." Her hand fell to my arm and gave me a gentle squeeze of reassurance. "I promise that I will do everything I can to keep you safe. Besides, if anyone wants to lay their hands on you, they'll have to come through me first."
