Kai's current owner never came back that night like he usually did, and he was becoming worried; not for the man's sake, but because the longer he wasn't there, the more his wife abused him. Kai was sort of grateful that she had gone to bed, so he went into the bedroom his owner gave him, and sat by the window. Kai couldn't really do much, but stare up at the stars through the window; he was never taught to read, he cant really cook, and he is not good with communication at all; he still kind of had the mind of a six-year-old, even though he was anything but. A gentle knock came to his door, and before he could turn around it opened and in came one of the maids of the house; he remembered her name as Mei, because out of all the maids in the house, she wasn't afraid of his owner's wife. She came in with a plate, and Kai could tell it was food by the smell.
"I know you haven't had anything all day, so I brought you something."
"I'm fine; I'm not hungry," Kai said, but his stomach said otherwise. Mei laughed a little as she gave him the plate, and sat next to him. Mei was a gentle, but strong old woman, and she has been like a grandma to Kai since he's been here; in all of the hell Kai has been through, Mei was the nicest person he has ever met.
"How is your shoulder," Mei asks while Kai was eating. Earlier that day, his owner's wife had burned him with her cigarette; the area was still red and tender, but a tiny bit of scab had begun to form.
"Fine," Kai replied simply as he continued to eat. When he was finished, Kai bowed and handed her the plate saying, "thank you for the meal."
"Aww, you are such a well-mannered boy; you are very welcome." Mei squeezes his cheek a bit; Kai smiles a bit at the praise, but it immediately fades and he goes back to staring out the window. Mei notices his quick change in mood, and she sighs.
"Well, have sweet dreams, dear," Mei says as she pets his head and heads for the door; before she leaves, she looks back at him, and shakes her head.
"I wish that someday you can be free of this cycle of enslavement; no one, even someone so young, should have to go through this. Just hold on a bit longer; I have a feeling my prayers will be heard, and you will have peace."
That night, Kai had a somewhat pleasant dream; he dreamt about being with his brother again.
The next morning, Kai was woken up abruptly by a pitcher of water being thrown on him.
"Wake up, you whore!" She also throws the pitcher at him, and he yelps in pain. Kai rubs the spot where the pitcher hit him as he looks at the woman.
"My husband never came home last night, and he is not answering his phone. You better hope he comes back soon, or you are dead." After yelling, the woman storms out of the room and slams the door.
Kai's owner never did come back, and it wasn't until a few weeks before he had to back to his seller that he overheard on the news that his owner was found dead and body found discarded in a body bag. His owner's wife went crazy after finding out, and the police coming to the house to inform her in person only made it worse. She took out her anger and grief on both Kai and the house, but Kai got the most of it.
"This is all your fault! If it weren't for you, he would still be alive," she would yell as she kicked and beat on him; when he tried to run, she would grab him by his hair and drag him back. Kai was left on the floor in the middle of the fall bruised, and bloody, and he thought the abuse was over; however, when the woman came back, she was holding a gun, and pointing it straight at Kai's face. Kai was afraid at first as he was face-to-face with the barrel of the gun, but then he wasn't afraid at all; he closes his eyes as he is accepting of his fate. All he can hear is the echo of the womans sobbing thought the hall as he prepares to die, but when he hears the resounding bang, and the plash of warmth on his face, he becomes confused. He cracks an eye open, but what greets his sight has his eyes flying open in horror; the woman was laid in front of him, soaking in a growing puddle of her own blood, and a very noticeable bullet hole straight though her head. It was then that he realized that the warmth plashed on his face was the woman's blood, and soon the warmth running down his face was his own tears spilling from his eyes. The sound of racing footsteps was heard coming up the stairs, and the maids of the house appeared; the all froze at the end of the hall with a gasp; all the maids stayed frozen, except of Mei, who slowly walked down the fall to the scene. Mei goes over to the lady to check her pulse, even though she already knew she was dead, and then moved over to Kai who had pressed himself to the wall as he hugged himself, and cried his eyes out.
"Hush now, dear, it is going to be alright," Mei cooed to him as she took him into a comforting hug. Mei thought Kai was crying because he had watched someone die right in front of him, but, in reality, he was upset because she didn't kill him like he wanted.
Kai didn't know what to do with himself anymore; he had been so close to being free, but it was snatched away from him in the blink of an eye. The news about the deaths spread quickly, and before he knew it, Kais seller came to get him. Like usual, he was drugged before they made their departure back to 'the warehouse'—is what he calls the place his seller does his business; he's drugged so that the location of the 'warehouse' stays secret just in case he escaped and ran into the police.
Kai woke up in his old room again, the room where he waits for a new customer to choose him, or have a taste of him. He was once again chained to the bed by a collar and chain; the chain was long enough for him to walk about the room and the bathroom, but not enough for him to leave. Now, it was a matter of him waiting for who knows how long.
