Seeing another cute boy at the beach is nothing new to me. Everyday you see the same cute boys at the beach that you see at school. Rarely though, do you see someone unfamiliar in our small town. Today though, as I was walking with Piper on the beach I saw someone I'd never seen before. He was cute with shaggy brown hair and beautiful blue eyes. He was at least 5'8 and very tan. I watched him in his palm tree swim trunks as he flawlessly played volleyball, already fitting in with the rest of the boys.
Piper caught me staring and waved her hand in my face to get my attention. "Brae you're staring," she said laughing.
"Have you ever seen that guy?" I asked nodding my head in his direction.
"Nope." She smiled, stood up from her towel, and started walking towards him.
"Piper! Where are you going?" I whisper-yelled to her as I ran to try and keep up with her.
"Oh you know, just gonna go introduce ourselves. It's only the polite thing to do Brae," she said giggling again.
I tried to stop her but we had already reached the net. The volleyball rolled right to Piper and she picked it up and tossed it to her boyfriend Dean. He smiled at her and told the boys to take five and walked over and asked Piper what's up. She asked him about the new boy.
He glanced over at the new boy. "Oh Will? He just moved here with his mom from Illinois. He's real chill. And not to mention he's probably one of the best players out here now."
Piper nudged my arm and told noah how she caught me staring at him. Dean smiled and called Will's name. "Will! Come over here and meet some friends of mine!" Will walked over and he and Dean did some handshake. Looks like they were already pretty close. "This is my girlfriend, Piper, and Brae. Piper told me she caught Brae staring at you earlier," he said. I blushed hard as Piper slapped his arm and told him he wasn't supposed to say that.
Will flashed a smile at me with his perfectly straight teeth. I blushed even harder. "It's okay, I might've been watching you earlier too." We all laughed. "But I'm Will, nice to meet you Brae."
"You too," was all I was able to say.
Dean told the rest of the guys that he and Will were done for the night and we all walked back to mine and Piper's towels to get our things. Piper asked if Will wanted to hang out as we piled into Dean's jeep. He said he'd call his mom really fast and let her know he'd be home late. Piper sat in the front seat and turned on the radio. She went through all the stations until she heard the song. It was our song. The three of us would always sing it loud and proud when it came on. She waited to turn it up loud until Will was back in the jeep giving us a thumbs up on the plan. Piper blared the radio and her, Dean, and I sang at the top of our lungs. Will sat next to me in confusion. When the song ended I told him the story of how John Mellencamp, Hurts So Good, became "our song". He laughed at the story as we pulled into Parker's Diner.
"Parker's is our go-to place, especially on nice Saturday nights like this. Brae's uncle owns it," we informed Dean before we went in.
"Oh my! My favorites are here!" Shouted my uncle Parker as we entered the diner. He walked us to our booth, took our usual orders, and introduced himself to Will and Will told him how he'd just moved here. "Well Will, I'll be the first to tell you that you're already in great hands with the best kids here," he said smiling as he went to get our drinks.
Sitting next to me, Will told us he really enjoyed our warm welcomings and company. "I've never moved before, and I was scared. Scared that I wouldn't fit in or find anyone, but I found you guys, so thank you."
"Well we kinda found you too, thanks to Brae here who couldn't keep her eyes off of you all morning," Piper said. I threw a salt packet at her and we all cracked up.
When we finished eating we headed to mine and Piper's house. We live together, but we aren't sisters. My mom and Piper's mom are really close friends and have always been. Our dad's both went into the army together, and so our moms were always lonely at home. As a solution, Piper and I talked our parents into the idea that we could all just move into Piper's house since it was too big for Piper and her parents after her brother moved to Missouri a few years ago with his fiance. My family moved in when Piper and I were in 8th grade and we each got our own rooms.
We got out of the jeep and walked into the house. Piper suggested that I give Will a tour of the place, so I did. I showed him all of the rooms and introduced him to mine and Piper's moms too. He was so attractive in the polite way he talked to them. After I showed him around we went to the backyard where Piper and Dean were each lying in a beach chair by the pool. We both pulled up a chair and joined them. We sat there and talked for a few minutes before we all decided to go swimming. Dean jumped in first and Piper followed. Will and I jumped in at the same time. The water felt cool and refreshing on my skin from being out in the hot sun all day.
After a while I went inside to get lemonades for all of us. I sat on the edge watching them all splash around. I was lost in thought and jumped when Will said my name.
"I didn't mean to scare you," he said laughing. He pulled himself out of the water to sit next to me. We sat right there on the edge of the pool and talked for what seemed like hours. It was nice. We told each other about our lives and I told him more about our little town.He asked me if my name was short for something and I said that it was always just Brae. I told him what guys were jerks and which girls were "no-gos". "Well, 'Just Brae', I'm pretty sure I already have my eye set on this really pretty girl I saw at the beach earlier," he said with a little wink and a smile. I was still grinning as Dean and Piper came over to us.
"We should probably get you home soon," Dean said to Will. Will agreed and we all walked out to the jeep.
"Tonight was really fun," Will said to me as he got in the passenger seat, "I can't wait for another one."
"There'll be plenty more, trust me." I replied. We all said our goodbyes and then they drove off.
I couldn't stop smiling as Piper and I headed inside. "So what'd you guys talk about earlier?" Piper asked playfully nudging me and smiling.
"A lot. It was really nice. Pipe, he's so sweet," I replied.
"You guys should seriously date." We both laughed at that.
"I really do like him, it's just too early. We literally just met today Pipe."
"I know, but it'd still be cute," she said. I silently agreed.
We stayed up late talking and watching movies and I fell asleep thinking about how happy I was and how excited I was for what was to come. I couldn't wait for whatever the near-future would bring.
