Liz's POV
"Thanks for tonight. I really had a good time." I gave him a small smile and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
Brazen gave me one of his signature dashing smiles, his white teeth gleaming.
"I'm glad you enjoyed it," he said. "I have a big game tomorrow at school. I'd like it if you could make it. For support."
"Are you sure?" I pouted. "What about your girlfriend, Kayla?"
I glanced down at my phone on my lap and risked a small grin.
"She's going out of town tomorrow or something," Brazen answered smoothly. "Don't you worry about that. This is about you and me."
"Definitely."
I glanced down again. She was coming. It was time to go for it.
I leaned over the small table and went in for the kiss. Brazen leaned forward and slowly closed his eyes.
"You bastard!"
The words rang through the mall. A few people around us turned in their seats to stare. It must be impossible for them to mind their own business, but I didn't mind. It was part of the effect.
Brazen's head snapped up and he stared at the entrance of the café with wide eyes. Standing there was Kayla and her two friends. I couldn't remember their names. Probably Brainless Follower number one and two.
Kayla marched over to the table we were sitting at.
"What do you think you're doing?" She looked halfway between bursting into tears and ripping his head off.
"I- I can explain every-" Brazen started.
"Oh yeah? I'm quite sure you can. But let's try to look at how many people you've really been seeing behind my back!" Kayla yelled at Brazen.
The three of them were all facing him, who was sitting there dumbfounded while Kayla was letting loose on him. I used this time to sneak away from the group and out of the café.
Once outside, I let out a snigger. I baited Brazen into a date with me and then convinced Kayla's friends to take her out for coffee at a very specific place before she went away for a week to visit her sick grandparents. Not one of my best jobs, but Brazen had it coming. Probably because he's a pig and I felt like it.
And I got a free movie and popcorn out of the deal.•••
I slowly walked to the big school building and took a deep breath. They say it's supposed to calm you down if you breath deeply, but I don't know who "they" are or if this is supposed to be effective.
I get sarcastic when I'm nervous and there is only one place that makes me this nervous.
High School.
The place of judgement of a bunch of awkward teenagers who don't have the braincells to count to five. Luckily, I've learned to keep them from bothering me and how to stay at the top from the shadows.
I walked into the school building, my bag slung over one shoulder. The bell rang. Exact time as every other day. I get to school at exactly the time school starts so I can go directly to my classes. Otherwise I would be forced to stand awkwardly and wait or talk to someone. Neither seemed like a good option, so I avoided it.
I saw Brazen in my direct path ahead of me. He looked up from the people he was talking to and noticed me, quickly ducking into a different passage to get away. He was already scared of me. That was quick. I've certainly had worse people who took longer than him. I guess he had quite the nasty girlfriend.
News spreads around about someone like me, but it doesn't seem to travel very far. Every now and again I get the chance to target someone specific, but some still don't learn.
I suddenly noticed someone coming up to me out of the corner of my eye. Jason. Oh great, here we go.
Jason is an interesting character. By interesting, I mean complete dumbass who can't keep it in his pants. There are just always a few of those.
"Hey, Liz," he said, giving me a stupid grin. "I'm having a party tonight and I'd like it if you came. Don't tell anyone, but you're the only one invited."
"Sounds great," I said, smiling sweetly. "Just after you go burn in hell. Piss off."
"Hey, no need to get like that," Jason slowly approached me, trying to force me against the wall. Quite the flattery.
"I will kick your ass if you step any closer," I warned him. "Go. Or else."
I glared at him in my signature way and he held up his hands and walked off. Some boys just need time to learn.
