I don't know what it is.
Maybe it's the thrill of being caught.
Maybe it's the rush of adrenaline that courses through my veins.
Maybe it's the thought of people chasing me.
Or maybe, it's the ringing of the sirens.
My grasp tightens on the bag as my legs carry me through the narrow hallway.
I hear a pair of footsteps in front of me, a pair right behind me, and multiple more far behind me.
It's so dark, and very late, that I can't see more than five feet in front of me, nor five feet behind.
We hit the stairwell, as planned, but it came up faster than I expected. I almost dive head first down the stairs, but a hand grasps the back of my shirt and restrains me from doing so.
"Thanks," I look behind me, and make eye contact with my oldest brother.
"Just keep going," the anxiousness in his eyes evident, nonetheless he releases me in a forward motion.
I twist my body forward and take two stairs at a time. I reach the end and take off sprinting.
I can hear the door being opened a few feet in front of me.
That's the goal.
I will my legs to move faster, and they do. The door is closed by now, and I have to throw my body into it to open it up again.
I continue to run, still barely being able to see, but knowing what to do.
I'm a good twenty feet away from the door when I hear it close. I now only hear the pounding of three pairs of feet on the floor.
And sirens.
As my eyes adjust, I can see that we're running through the alley. Through the lanes leading to the main roads, I can see police cars flying by in flashes.
My heart starts to race even more; I almost giggle at the feeling of it.
See? The adrenaline, I love it.
We have three lanes left until we turn right. And then we're underground and on our way home.
We pass by two lanes, and I see my other brother book it to the right. It comes up quick again, and it's my turn to go around the corner.
We reach the sewer entrance, my brother holding it open for me and my oldest brother.
"Go, go, quickly," he pats my back as I pass by him and into the darkness behind him.
I stop just inside of the entrance and wait for my brothers to join me. Luke closes the entrance behind him; the only light source being street lamps filters through it.
"Okay, you guys know where to go from here?" Josh checks one more time, before we split.
"Yeah, I think we've got it," Luke glances at me and back to Josh, nodding the whole time.
"Okay, Luke. You're first," Josh motions Luke to move along. "We don't have much time before they check down this way."
Luke nods and jogs off. I can see him for about ten feet before he disappears out of our view.
