I feel my mouth open and close at the sight of her. She hasn't changed, except her hair, which has gotten longer. Still the same small, frail body, the same intense blue-gray eyes. Still the same Tris. My Tris.
She looks surprised and words start to tumble out.
"Oh my God. I'm sorry I've been looking for a place to stay and the woman down stairs told me to come up here,"
I grin at that. The woman who's always at the front, Allie, has been my friend since I moved in here. Shortly after I moved in, I told her what Tris looked like and how she would probably be a little frazzled, and asked her to send her up to my apartment if she saw her.
Tris is still talking "and I guess she didn't know you were-"
I had walked across the room while she was talking and pressed my lips to hers. I had no idea why she was so confused, but I didn't care.
I was bringing my hands up to touch her face, but she didn't give me the chance.
She pushed me back. "What the hell!?" She demands. That's when I realize the only light source is coming from the bathroom, which is behind me. She can't see me, just my outline.
I touch her face with my fingertips "Tris," I say in a quiet voice, "it's me." She studies me for a second, then her eyes widen with recognition. She steps forward and kisses me. I wrap my arms around her, pulling her as close as I can get her. She presses her hand in between my shoulder blades. I kiss her harder. She pulls back a few centimeters. "I'm sorry, Im sorry." She says breathlessly, "I didn't recognize you and-" I don't let her finish, mainly because I really don't care. She kisses me back and runs her fingers through my hair, which is long, considering I haven't cut it in four months.
We stay like that for a while, until she pulls back for breath, and leans her head against my chest. She closes her eyes and stays like that. It's then that I realize she's probably been on the streets, if she was looking for somewhere to stay, and I know that can exhaust people. I see it everyday as they walk by.
I tilt her head up a little, and kiss her gently. "I'll get you something to wear" she nods a little and drops her arms. I go and pull a black shirt out of a drawer and hand it to her. She takes it and heads to the bathroom to change.
I turn to the curtains, to shut them, because they usually let in too much light to sleep. When I turn around, Tris is laying down on the bed, watching me, but looking half asleep.
I step over to the bed and lay down next to her, wrapping my arms around her. She tilts her head up and I kiss her softly. She kisses me back, but only a little. I pull back. "Sleep," I whisper against her cheek, "your safe." I don't know why I added that last part, but it felt right at the time. "I love you." She whispers, I kiss her "I love you too." I kiss her again but she already asleep.
I feel her breath, wrapped in my arms, until eventually, I let myself go too.

And that's it! Sorry it's so short, but I just kinda wanted to see how people react to my writing before I go into a full on story, so thanks for reading!
All rights go to the amazingly talented Veronica Roth!
