"Why did he have to come back at this time?" I wonder out loud to Holly and Tessa.
"Yeah, it's almost the end of high school," Tessa replies.
"Only two more terms to go before we graduate!" Holly adds.
"But why now after so long..." I express, "It's been three years and I haven't heard a thing from him. Not until now."
"Didn't you two stay on good terms when he moved?" Holly looks at me intently.
"Yeah, but as soon as he moved it was as if he no longer wanted to keep in contact anymore." I hurry to explain, "I messaged him and asked to meet up a few times but he always had an excuse ready for me. I've got to admit some of them were good ones."
"Well if they were good then are you sure they weren't actual ones?" Tessa asks me, her eyebrows furrow in questioning. She had known that I spent a lot of time with him and she periodically asked if I liked him more than I friend.
I open my mouth to answer her question, only to be elbowed in the side by Holly. She nudges her head to the left. I followed her indication to see Cole walking towards us. His long strides get to me quickly and he blocks the sun with his back.
A smile breaks across my face and I reach my arm out to give him a hug.
"Hey Cole, you're looking pale. Did the holiday's not treat you too well?"
He gives me a slight chuckle.
"That's what not seeing the sun for two weeks does to you." Cole replies, showing off his white teeth with a grin that not only captivates me but compels me to do the same.
"It was raining almost every day in London," he continues.
His gaze drifts away from mine and he looks over my shoulder.
"We got a new student, did you guys know?"
The three of us follow his nod to see who Cole was talking about.
And sure enough he stands there, leaning against the pole with his arm propped up. He is reading intently on his phone and to any onlooker he appears nonchalant to his surroundings. His tall figure and lean build almost has me fooled.
But it is his head that gives him away. He angles it in a position where his dirt brown hair shadows just over his face.
And if the person I knew back then was anything like he is now, than I know what he means.
