My aunt convinced me to go to a ladies luncheon with her after my yoga class on Saturday. We had to move days because half of us weren’t getting there on time anyway so it just made sense. So after yoga I joined my aunt at a fancy restaurant in the middle of town. The inside was like a garden theme where vines were hanging on the walls and ceiling. I met some of aunt Cherry’s friends that she knew from work. Meaning she knew them as friends that worked with her, for her, and who she worked for.
There was only one other girl there that was younger than twenty. She had dark hair and light eyes and was very quiet and shy. She introduced herself as Malinda and said she was studying at the local college to become an elementary school teacher. I remembered how Brody, Natalie’s little brother, couldn’t have been much older than five or six. By time she finished college he’d be in second grade, there is a slight possibility that she could be his teacher.
“Where do you work?” I hadn’t started a job yet but was considering getting one. I probably need to get a job some time soon. I’ll be eighteen in a week and I’ve never had a job. I helped neighbors and babysat but I don’t think I even have a work permit.
“I don’t have a job yet.” Usually when I tell people I don’t have a job they have a look of judgment on their face, but Malinda didn’t have that look.
“Oh how nice. Well if you were looking there’s a secretarial job available at the school if you wanted. I just love kids but if you don’t then I understand.” The kindness of her personality radiated off of her and I felt bad that I really wanted this new job.
“No that would be great! Do you have the phone number with you?”
“Yeah here it’s in my bag.” After two minutes I had the Malinda and the schools number with me. “Just tell them I was the one who told you about it and you’ll be good to go.”
“Thank you this is really sweet of you. But if you want to be a teacher then why wouldn’t you take this job?” I didn’t want to ruin my chance of having this job but I still want her to know she can have it first.
“I am an assistant for the library already so I wouldn’t have the time. I have to go, but it was lovely meeting you!”
“Thank you so much it was so great to meet you too! Bye!”
“Bye!” She smiled before leaving the restaurant.
I was once again the youngest person there. I didn’t really want to come but my aunt wanted me to meet some of her friends so I didn’t say no. We left shortly after and I had met some other people too.
As soon as we got home I called the school and they said I had within the first month to get my work permit signed since I had to send it to my mom and she had to send it back. They said I could start Monday morning and they would explain everything then. I had already asked my aunt and she said that it was fine and that we would go shopping for some work clothes for me later today.
We left for the mall and since my birthday was a week away my aunt would pay for the clothes as an early present so I didn’t feel bad that she was paying.
