Kachina Takame
"I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint ..." Habakkuk 2:1
Kachina was being followed. She hadn't seen anyone in particular but she could feel their eyes burrowing through the back of her skull. And every time she checked, there was no one there. Honestly, it was more frustrating than terrifying. Just where is this guy? She forced the thoughts to the back of her mind and stared at the door in front of her. Let them follow.
In her palm was the key the headmaster had given her. He was an odd man with a whimsical style and the way he dressed reminded her of a clown. She giggled at the thought.
She turned the key and hesitantly opened the door, huffing out the breath she was holding when it revealed a long corridor and it just kept going. There were many doors to choose from and frankly, it was intimidating. Which one is it?
"Psst. Kwahu, can you help me find the classroom?" she whispered. Without a word, the eagle spirit soared down the corridor in search of the right door.
"It's right here," Masaw, the Skeleton Man, pointed to the door in front of me.
"Oh ... Kwahu, nevermind," she called out. Masaw and Kwahu dissipated like mist.
Turning her attention back to the door, she took a deep breath and opened it, entering what resembled a storage room rather than a classroom. Maybe it was that dank, musty smell coming from God knows where. Surprisingly, or perhaps unsurprisingly, several cram students were already seated. To avoid social interaction, she quietly made a beeline for one of the back tables. Not that she was antisocial. She just didn't know how to make friends. She'd been homeschooled and lived a sheltered life.
With a shrug, she put in earbuds and hit shuffle in her playlist, hoping no one would approach her just yet. She needed to gauge the situation first. She surveyed the room, starting with the two girls closest to the door. One girl had long purple hair in pigtails and a prissy attitude that rivaled Regina George. Kachina inwardly groaned. Please don't be one of those people that starts drama. Her friend, a girl with short brown hair in a bob, glanced at her and gave a smile. Ok, she seems nice. Kachina smiled back before peering at the other half of the room. The first person she noticed practically screamed 'bad boy' and she almost snorted with laughter. He had a thick blonde streak in his hair that flared up like a rooster's comb, multiple ear piercings and a bad case of resting bitch face. Next to him was a short boy with a shaved head and glasses. She hoped to God that he was as geeky as she thought he was.
That's when she spotted movement out of the corner of her eye and sucked in a breath as a boy with salmon pink hair sauntered up to her table. She mentally screamed. No, please no. I haven't analysed you yet.
"Hey," he said smoothly, "would you grab my arm, so I can tell my friends I've been touched by an angel?" Oh, he's that type. She took an earbud out and pretended to be confused.
"What?" I asked innocently. He blinked and his face went from flirtatious and confident to shock and defeat.
He muttered an "oh, nothing" before doing the walk of shame back to his snickering friends.
Then the door opened and a boy carrying a sword bag entered. He stopped and introduced himself, "I'm Okumura Rin. Nice to meet ya," before sitting down next to a white dog at one of the front desks. I didn't think pets were allowed. Service dog, maybe?
