"I'm doing a bit of an interview piece. You know, giving readers a chance to ask you guys some questions." I smirked and gave a little shrug. "It's not often people get to ask someone with your background questions."
Verrin chuckled. "Fair enough. Okay, I'm an open book. Fire away!"
I dig my hand into my purse and pull out the cell phone I had the questions listed on. I open the proper app and shoot him a smile. "We'll start easy. This reader wants to know if you have any human guy friends? Someone you might watch the game with or something."
Verrin gave a little shrug. "I have in the past but it's hard to keep human friends. I don't age and eventually, they realize that. When I have had them I've had to move away and break contact after a few years. I had human friends growing up but they are long gone now."
I feel a frown tug at my lips, realizing I'd never really contemplated that side of immortality. "Do you have any non-human friends?"
Verrin grinned and nodded. "Yeah, the good thing about being my age is you have tons of time to foster friendships. I have friends in most races. We recently put together a paintball team. I even got the doorman at my New York penthouse into it."
"Is he a..." I trail off, not sure of the right term.
"A supernatural being?" He snickered. "Yeah. His name is Theirry and he's half-fae. He's even a damn good shot."
"That's awesome!" I grinned and glanced down at my list of questions once more. "Ok, here's another. What's your favourite food?"
"Ooh, that's a hard one. I love to eat. I adore pizza, cheesecake, bacon, anything chocolate. Cass introduced me to what she calls evil ice cream. It's vanilla with salted caramel and pralines mixed in. So good!" A devious twinkle sparked in his eyes and he gave her a naughty grin. "Want to know a secret?"
"Y-yes." I breathe. It's hard to keep your wits about you when an Incubus looks at you like that.
"The best thing I've ever tasted is Cassidy." He purred happily.
"Ah. I see." I glance at my questions again and find another quickly. "Speaking of Cass, if you could take her to any time you've lived through, which one and why?"
Verrin gave a little hum of consideration as he thought. His face became wistful and he sobered all the sexy teasing vanishing. "I'm torn. I know she would kill to see to the library of Alexandria. Book nerd that she is, it would be the best gift I could ever give her. If I had the choice though I think I'd want to take her back to meet my parents. My mom would have loved her and my dad would be so proud to consider her family. My parents were always worried that us boys would have trouble finding a forever sort of love and meeting Cass would assure them there was hope for us."
I blink away the dampness that his emotional answer brings to my eyes. "That really sweet. I'm sure your parents would have loved her." Silence falls for a moment and then I speak up once more. "Can I ask you a question of my own?"
Verrin shrugged. "Of course."
"How did you know Cass was the one?"
The smile that breaks across his face lights his eyes. "She was... everything. I could see that she was gorgeous, petite and curvy. A perfect package, you know? But when I got know her, it was something else. She was smart and quick-witted, a romantic at heart and had so much courage. She's a fighter and someone you want at your back. Hell, I think I wanted her in my arms from the minute she told me where to shove it." He gave a satisfied little chuckle. "She just lights up my world and makes things I've been looking at for thousands of years seem brand new."
I grin at his happiness. "That's really beautiful."
