The longer I stayed in this place, the worse I felt. Not physically of course; I was slowly progressing. Mentally, however, I felt like the life was being drained out of me. I had done as I was told as the nurse did the PET scan, and then was wheeled back to my hospital room. Niall was sitting right where he was when I left, and he looked as if he was thinking hard. He looked at me as though he was concerned, but said nothing. I made myself as comfortable as I could before talking to Niall.
“What’re you thinking about?” I asked, wondering what he was so focused on. He sighed and shifted around.
“Oh, it’s nothing, just letting my mind wander,” he answered nonchalantly. “Did they find anything out from the scan?” he changed the subject. I shrugged my shoulders.
“I don’t know, they haven’t told me anything,” I replied, growing more impatient. Just then the doctor stepped just inside the door, motioning to Niall that he wished to speak with him. Niall gave me a reassuring smile as he followed the doctor into the hallway. Why don’t they ever just tell me anything? Why am I always the last one to know? I let out an exaggerated sigh and laid my head back, wishing more than anything to be out of this sterilized jail. I felt trapped. Niall returned moments later, alone. “Well? What’d he say?” I asked, cutting to the chase.
“The doc says you have a moderate concussion,” he informed me quietly. “He said it isn’t something that can’t be helped, but it’s going to take a while,”
“Oh. Did he say anything else?”
“Well, he said one other thing,”
“Which was…?” I encouraged.
“You may never regain your memory,” he told me, barely audible. I didn’t really know what to say. I didn’t feel so hurt about it. I mean, it’s not like I was going to keep forgetting more and more things. What I learned so far about myself wasn’t so stressful: Maddie was my best friend, she’s dating Harry, and Niall is a very good friend of mine.
“Has he said when I can leave?” I asked hopefully.
“If everything goes well, Monday,” Niall answered happily. That wouldn’t be too bad, only a few more days here. I looked down at my lap, wishing Monday would get here faster.
“I can’t wait. I hate being here.” I paused, “I feel so alone. I mean, it’s great when you or Maddie come to visit me, but when you’re gone, the place is so empty. It drives me insane,” I finished. I looked up to see Niall staring intently at me. His eyes looked sad, as if he felt the same way I did.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “Whenever I’m not working, I promise to be here with you. Don’t forget you can always call me if you need me; I’ll always find a way to get here. Monday will be here before you know it,” he concluded with a smile.
“Thank you, Niall. It means a lot,” I replied gratefully.
