I woke up to people chatting around me. I slowly opened my eyes to find three people around me, talkng. Once they noticed me they all ran over.
"What happened?" I asked them. My voice sounded so grogy so I coughed.
"Well that mustang that followed you here went crazy and reared up. Luckily, I grabbed you and pulled you back before she had a chance to step on your head. But you did hit you head on the ground and passed out." Jake spoke up. He looked like he had been crying. But why?
"The doctor here said that you are going to be fine and that nothing serious had happened." He gestured toward a man behind him. I smiled lightly trying to be polite.
"Well I'll be on my way." The doctor said, exiting the house.
"How long have I been out?" I broke the awkward silence that grew.
"2 days. Poor Jake here wouldn't leave your side for a minute." He patted Jake slightly on the back. I knew that he had to be lying. Jake would never like a girl like me.
He probably had girls practically throwing themselves at him. He had golden blonde hair, and the most beautiful eyes that you would ever see in your lifetime. I didn't know that I was staring at him until he cleared his throat. I could feel the blood rising to my cheeks. But I bit my lip to hid my emotions.
"Sorry just thinking about the, uh, horse." I lied.
"Yeah, sure." He replied sarcastically. I blushed and bit my lip harder and I started to taste blood. I sucked the blood into my mouth so it wouldn't get anywhere and continued the conversation.
"Where's the horse." I reffered to the mustang.
"Out in the stall. First barn. He wouldn't leave so we put him there so he wouldn't scare the other horses." Jacob told me. I mumbled a thank you and headed outside, Jake was following me.
"May I help you." I stopped in my trackes and turned around to face Jake.
"Actually I wanted to see the, uh, horse too." He facked a smile to me. I smiled back. It wasn't a fake smile. But it wasn't a happy one either.
I ignored him and turned back around and walked in the barn. I looked in all the stalls, until I saw the wild mustang put his head out of a stall. I chuckled at his sillyness and walked over to him. "Hi, boy." I cooed in his ear.
"You better watch out that horse can kill you." Jake informed me. I scoffed and turned towards him.
"Well, look. I think he's really killing me." I replied, sarcastic.
"Fine, fine. But when your dead then don't come crawling to me." He put his hand up in defense.
"How can I crawl if I'm dead?" I asked, curious. He started speaking again but I zoned out and focused on the mustang infront of me.
I started to thing back when I was 5 years old.
*Flashback*
"Mommy! Daddy! This one I want tish one!" I said, pointing to a tamed black mustang.
"Let me see." My dad told me as he look through a bunch of papers beside the stall. "Well he's broke. And he is calm. And can be ridden. What do you think honey?''
"Perfect." She said smiling. I remember naming her Belleza. My mom always called me Belleza and told me that it meant Beauty in Spanish. And this horse was a real beauty.
*Flashback End*
"Belleza." I whispered, trying not to be heard.
"What was that?" Jake butted in.
"Oh, just a name for the horse." I told him.
"What is it?" He looked at me with wide eyes.
"Belleza, it means Beauty in Spanish." I stated not turning away from the horse.
"Maybe, I shoud call you Belleza." Jake said. I didn't turn to him because, blood was rushing up to my cheeks. I bit my lip but it wasn't working. So I buried my face into Belleza's mane to hide myself.
"Why are you hiding in a horses mane?" Jake let out a small chuckle.
"Because, he... he... smells good?" it came out more like a question and made me burry my face into his neck even harder.
"Yeah right. How about to put a haulter and lead and take him out to the corral. Maybe this wild spirit is tammable." He suggested. I nodded and did as told.
As I walked into the corral I just lead her around a little bit. "Why don't you teach her some things?" Jake said as he enter the corral. I soothingly rubbed Belleza's neck to relax her. She felt so tense. Jake told me what to do and taught me a few things. Like how to make the horse to walk backwards, make him turn right in to a small turn, and the same with the left.
"Maybe tommorow you can ride her." I laughed at him. But when I looked at him he was serious and my laughing died down to a small cough.
"I don't know. After what happened with Cloudy. I don't know if I can ride a horse for a while." I said, shyly.
"It's okay. I'll be with you the whole time." He reassured me. I smiled at him and we made our way back to the stables. We took all of the tack off of Belleza and groomed her before putting her back.
We walked up to the house and exchanged goodbyes and sat at the dinner table with Jacob. I told him all about what I did today. He wasn't happy at first when I told him I went near the mustang. But he let it go after I told him that she didn't do anything to harm me.
And for the first time in forever he felt like a real father.
