The tragedy of life is not death...but what we let die inside of us while we live~ Norman Cousins

"I'm ready!" It was my seventh birthday, and I was about to blow out the candles on my cake. I looked at my mother, then blew them out. "Yay," I shouted. She hands me the knife, and helps me cut l
the cake. I put the cake on a plate, and turn back to my mother to see blood on her hands and a knife in her. She raises her eyebrows ever so slightly, then drops dead.

I gasp, and sit up clutching my chest. I look around to see sweat soaked in my duvet, sheets, and pillowcase. I look at my alarm clock, surprised to see it was 2:38 in the morning.

I bit my lip before I let out a sob, then another one. I was never going to get the image of my mother lifeless out of my mind. And for some strange reason that brought a clinching rage in my heart, that no one could take away.

~8:48~

"How did you sleep last night, Gen?" My grandmother asked. I stopped eating my turkey-bacon, and looked at her.

"Genesis?" She snaps her fingers in my face.

I blink, and force a smile "Y-yea,I slept like a baby."

I get up from the table, and am about to head to my room when my grandmother catches my elbow "Genesis, You do know today is the funeral, right?"

I mentally roll my eyes, of course I knew today was my mothers funeral. How could I not?

I nibble on my lip. " Yea, umm... what time does it start again?" I knew when it started, but I really didn't want to get in a argument.

She smiles brightly, obviously glad that I was making her feel useful. "It starts at 10:00 and we leave at 9:30, so hurry, and get dressed."

I jog up the stairs, and into my room. Going to my closet I realize that I didn't pack anything. Then going in my suitcase I realize I didn't pack a lot. I grab a black, lace dress, with scalloped edges, and a flouncy skirt. Going in the shower, I realize that there are mirrors almost covering every inch of the wall. I look at myself to see sunken eyes, and cracked lips. Shaking my head, I jump in the shower.

"Genesis, hurry up!" I had been in the shower for a good thirty minutes, and was well and refreshed when I came out. "Coming!" I shout. Coming out, I grab a pair of black panties, and black lace bra. After, pulling my clothes on, I apply mascara, and some foundation, then grab a pair of black pumps. I rush downstairs to see my grandmother in a black dress, and my grandfather in a black suit. "I'm here," they turn around, and my grandmother smiles," You look just like your mother," I smile dryly.

I didn't want to look like her I wanted her.
