She leaned over the edge of the bridge and looked into the raging waters below. the cool mist drifted from the water onto her face. She unlocked her iPod and played a song that she held dear to her heart. 'Trees' by twenty one pilots. She swung her legs up and sat on top of the railing, jokingly leaning forward and back toying with the gravity of the bridge's height. A faint, smooth voice escaped her lips as she began to sing along to her favorite song.
"I know, where you stand, silent in the trees, and thats where I am, silent in the trees," she heard a car passing behind her and watched them disappear into the fog shortly after. A small part of her wanted to lean forward and tumble into the river below. Facing away from the road into the river she thought. What would it be like? The thought of free falling into the beautiful nature below sounded nice. Not the potentially injuring herself part, but the feeling of weightlessness and freedom, almost like your flying. Being free of all restraints that tied her to the earth.
"I want to know you, I want to see, I want to say," she sung as she leaned forward a little,
"Hello."
The noise of another car approaching the lonely bridge played in her ear. The sound of the tires on the wet pavement getting gradually louder was sort of calming. Listening to the noise get closer, and closer and...
Screeeeeeeeeeech
The sound of breaks shattered the calm as she spun around where she sat. A small silver car sat in the road behind her.
Shit, she thought, it's probably some angry parent or something. Just then a girl about her age stepped out of the drivers side of the car. Her expression is confused and concerned.
"Hey your not going to jump or anything are you" she nervously laughed. The girl on the railing jumped down and took a step to the side.
"No,no i just like to come here to listen to music and clear my head." She said quietly. The girl across from her stood there with a relieved expression. She had long brown hair that seemed to shimmer in the white light of the fog. She wore a leather jacket, a band tee, and black leggings. Something about her made the girl smile.
"Oh, ok that's a relief, my name's Gemma" she smiled.
"Cool, i'm uh Max' Max stuttered awkwardly. She noticed she never stopped her music and quickly paused it before Tyler could scream 'Hello' anymore.~~~~~~Max's POV~~~~~~
I watched as Gemma silently walked over to the ledge. She looked over into the rushing water and then turned to me,
" This river is definitely the prettiest part of this town." She said still looking down into the water. I smiled and said a short "Yeah." trying to act as normal as possible.
She patted the ledge with her hands and explained she had to go pick up her little sister from soccer practice, and had to go.
"you'll be ok right." she laughed
"Yeah I'll be fine." I said. She waved and got into her car and left with a short "See ya."
Again the soft noise of the rubber tires against the wet pavement filled the silence for about a minute.
Then, silence.
I liked the silence accompanied by the soft noise of the rushing water. It gave me room to think, but still have a calming sound in the background to keep me from drifting too far.
I jumped up on the railing again and leaned into the rushing water as I had before, why did that girl give me such a weird feeling? She seemed so....perfect? She said 'see ya later' but we've never met before. She probably went to the local high school, she seemed about my age and we were probably in the same grade.
Something felt, off about her though. She was so nice and cared about me, no one does that. Not even people I've known my whole life.
"Whatever" I sighed, I dropped down from the ledge and grabbed my bag and sketch book. My bag was covered in pins and little key chains on every zipper I could fit them. Each one had a story, I could remember where I got every one of them. It was like a little mosaic of my life stuck to the small fabric front of my bag. Every pin meant something to me either it be bands I'm obsessed with or something a friend or family member gave me.
I swung it around my shoulder and began walking the road back to my house, it wasn't a far walk but it took at least 5 minutes and I should've left 10 minutes ago if I didn't want miss dinner. Whatever.
Familiar roads and houses passed me by as I walked, the fog was beginning to clear and the sun shone through a small hole in the clouds. It was only at around 4:50 when I left the bridge so there were a couple hours of sun left which made it feel like the day wasn't near over yet.
