I make my way around the school into the back where the field is, my brother sees me immediately.
"Hey kid," he yells. His friends all pause their game of pass and turn their attention over to me.
"Hey Danny what's up." I call over to him. He walks up to me and passes me the ball.
"We were just playing nuke em' wanna join?" He says
"Of course!" I yell, throwing the ball at him.

I make my way over to where his friends are standing, there's a few long sticks on the ground separating two sides. Two people are on each side, Kevin, Chris, Mike and Kate. Kate is Chris's girlfriend, they've been on and off for two years now.

My brother goes to the side opposite to me and throws the ball to Kevin who's on my side. He catches it no problem and hands it to me to throw over. I walk up close to the sticks and throw the ball in between Mike and my brother, forcing Mike to leap to the side trying to catch the ball but failing. I watch as the ball hits the grass with a satisfying thud.
"Your out!" Kate yells from my side, laughing her insides out.
"What?! No way it was closer to Danny." Mike says in defense.
"You went for it though so your out." I laugh.
"Fine." Mike says, defeated, and walks over to a nearby beach.

Chris has the ball now and tries to throw it high over Kate but she leaps at the last second barely catching it by her fingertips.
"Oh come on the teams are so stacked I-" Chris starts but Kate cuts him off by whipping the ball to the left of him. His eyes widen and he leaps to the side catching the ball in both hands.
"Are they really," she says, "you know when you say that your only insulting your own team." She laughs. Chris angrily hands the ball to Danny.

I'm was so lost in laughter I didn't realize what just happened.

Danny. Has. The. Ball.

Oh no.

I immediately snap back into reality and focus all my attention on my brother. I try to remember his strategy, he usually either throws the ball so close to the line that no one can get to it or he throws it higher than I can reach. He's probably going to go for the first so I get ready to run forward. Either way I have to catch it.
"You ready kid?" He laughs.

His voice sounds distant

Small white dots dance across my vision.
"Of course." I say weakly as I try to rub the fuzziness out of my eyes.

What is wrong with me?

"Hey, you ok?" I hear Kevin's voice in the distance as everything goes black. Then I hear more voices, they sound panicked and rushed. My eyes are blinded by a bright light that reminds me of a doctors office. I squint at the white tiles below me.

What?

I hear my brothers voice panicking along with the others, there not my friends voices though. They sound like they belong to about five other adults. I can't make out anything anyone is saying. Except for when I hear my brother say,
"What the hell happened! Someone do something she wak-"
My vision goes black again and I can feel a headache creep it's way into my forehead.

I open my eyes again, this time it's a lot less bright and all I can see is the sun glistening against the damp grass. I feel someone grab me by the arm and pull me into a sitting position. I look up to see my brother holding me up by my shoulders. Everyone is standing around me while Danny and Kate sit next to me. I try to ask what happened but all that comes out is a small squeak.
"Hey she's awake, Max are you ok?" Danny asks.
"I'm...fine?" I struggle to say. I put my hands to my head to try and ease my throbbing headache.
"I can bring my car around if she can't walk." Mike offers. All the others agree and Mike runs off.
"Should I call 911?" Kate's says.

I shake my head and Danny signals for her to put her phone away.
"Guys...i...m fine." I say in between breaths.

Why am I out of breath?

"You had quite a fall just a minute ago I think your far from fine." Chris states the obvious as him and Kevin start to help Danny and Kate stand me up. Mike drives his car through a break in the fence and onto the field and Kevin opens the back door for me to get in. I'm squished in the middle whilst Danny and Kate sit on either side of me. Mike and Kevin sit in the front seats while Chris awkwardly sits in the back. The car lurches forward as Mike exits the school parking lot.

I constantly try to tell them I'm fine and I just have a migraine but they don't listen. I don't understand why they are all coming. Why is everyone freaking out and where are we going?
Danny takes out his phone and calls who I think is my mom. I scratch my face and notice a drop of blood on my hand. I replaced my hand on my head and search for a wound until I find a painful gash above my left eyebrow.
"Hey it's going to be ok just stay calm ok max." Kate tries to reassure me. Though I'm not scared at all, I'm confused.

Feel a small pang of anger as I realize how they are treating me like a child or like I'm fragile or I'll break easily. That's not me. I'm as strong as them! I know I fell but it's not that bad is it?

I catch my brother looking at me as he talks on the phone.
"Yeah she's pretty banged up and has a huge cut on her head...oh I don't have to- ok." He says. "This wasn't supposed to happen was it?" He pauses for a while. His face stays emotionless. Now I'm starting to feel afraid but I don't say anything and listen. "Oh, ok, how far back should we reset?" I feel my hands start to shake as a cold, sharp terror sets into my chest.

What's happening

Kate keeps trying to talk to me but I ignore her as I focus my attention on keeping my eyes open for as long as possible, my vision is blurring again. But this time I don't think it was an accident.

Blackness

Is all I see. It feels like I've been sleeping for a long time. I find myself standing in the field facing my brother as he holds the rubber ball.
"You ready kid?" He laughs. I get myself ready for any of his throws.
"Of course I am." I smile.

I feel a sense of deja vu as I watch him holding the ball. Something feels like it's missing from my mind.
