Hear me out

In stories, we always blame monsters, powerful evil villains and uncontrollable forces for our problems, and those are indeed great stories. But in this world, there are no blood sucking vampires or megalomaniac robots. There is only that voices over your shoulder, and the voice ringing in your mind. And yet, they might be more powerful than any werewolf I've ever heard of.

That evil god you've read so much about might have caused millions of fictional deaths, but the feeling you get when you know everyone's talking about you may make you shiver more than any imaginary immortal masochist. It may seem scary to be possessed by some magical demon, but the idea that those terrifying thoughts are purely yours would scare me more than any underworldly abomination.

We live in a world where we no longer believe in monsters, but instead became the monsters ourselves. Instead of some soul-sucking ghoul, we now have those terrible teachers in our education system. Instead of a mind mangling siren, we have Becky, the back-stabbing, trash-talking secretary. And unlike in our stories, they don't have green skin, sharp fangs or a body you can pass through. They look as sweet, wholesome and done as we are, and that just might be the scariest part.
