Theory:

There are a lot of different situations when we laugh. Right?

 There's the awkward silence, the sexual tension, the dumb joke, and the sarcastic comment.

But I think that we laugh because of words. All of those examples involve words, and speaking.

The awkward silence implies that someone had to say something awkward before the silence. (Duh)

The sexual tension doesn't require words, but it's possible 

The dumb joke is pretty obvious. Someone makes a joke, and it's so dumb, it's funny

The sarcastic comment is when someone says something ironic and doesn't laugh, causing everyone else to laugh
